A MUST READ!Can't really explain my feelings after reading this book. It seems like for the whole of my life I've been living a LIE, until the point of reading this book. Just like everyone else, as we've taught in schools, I too believed in liberal narrative, that secularism is good & there is this one peaceful religion. In 'Aaravarana - The Veil' - SL Bhyrappa literally lifts that VEIL & shows us HARSH facts that we all are prohibited to even consider looking into. This is not just a novel, i think this is a very well researched paper based on 150 other reference books & presented in extremely articulate manner (you can actually read the list of 150 reference books), This book will torment you, will make you throw if off, & will change you beliefs about life.Honestly this is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to know only the truth, believe me, your life will NEVER be same again after reading this book!
I came across this book via social media. After much procrastination i star5ed reading it this diwali and finished it in 2 days. The environment of vicious propaganda against Hinduism that we are living in, it was a must read. The deft handling of a sensitive subject is commendable apart from great narrative and style. But the best part about this book was connect. Belonging to a moderately conservative Hindu family i identified with the book at multiple levels.Thank you Dr Bhyrappa and Sandeep for this incredible work
I quite enjoyed this book not for any of the reasons I've read so far, such as it's accuracy in depicting the history of mughal rule, their iconoclasm and their practice of the Mosaic Distinction but for Shri Bhyrappas ability at vocalizing Marxist revisionism so clearly through the character of Professor Shastri. I think he provides a great amount of insight when he touches upon the themes of egalitarianism that Marxism and Islam both assert making them highly compatible in terms of ideology. There are lovely small insights that he provides along these lines, such as when the son of the protagonist Lakshmi returns from Saudi Arabia and speaks of the tacit racism he experiences, which mimic real experiences I have heard. Such small touches here and there really make for a more believable read. Overall his characters are well written, however I can't help but feel some of the flow of the book is lost because of it's translation into English from Kannada. Since I have no one to blame for this but myself (for not learning to read Kannada) I have given it 5 stars even though the narration is a little jarring, especially when the POV switches from one character to another.
Just the historical references in this book make it worth its weight in gold. The plot is mediocre, but Bhyrappa does an amazing job in bringing out the hypocrisy and double standards of the left brigade in whitewashing our history in an attempt to cover up the horrendous crimes perpetrated by generations of Muslim rulers - a warped history that we've unfortunately been fed on since independence. Fortunately for people who seek the truth, the physical evidence of these undeniable acts is still apparent in the form of broken idols, mosques that use temple pillars as steps/foundations, and numerous accounts of court historians of the Muslim rulers themselves, bragging about demolished temples and plundered loot. A must read - especially for the historical references that you can then go and read in all their original glory (or shame).
Best book which shows the pseudo intellectuals are trying to hide the history and tell us a history where everything is coming up roses. The reality is very harsh which the minority community should realise and accept. There is also an instance in the novel where the writes debunks one myth which is said by ram Puniyani about why Aurangzeb destroyed Vishwanath temple and built gyanvapi masjid.
Because my questions made Amir uncomfortable, he pronounced talaq just like that on the wife who had abandoned everything for him because his religion gives him that privilege. Where do I now stand, sir? Do you have any solutions for me?' Lakshmi, a rebellious, free-spirited and intelligent film-maker, breaks ties with her staunchly Gandhi an father to marry Amir, the man she loves. She even agrees reluctantly to Amir's request that she convert to Islam, as a formality and change her name to Razia. However, she is shocked to discover that her husband is not the open-minded, progressive individual he claimed to be. For after marriage, Amir takes his family's side in trying to force her to follow the more rigorous tenets of their faith. This sets her off on a personal journey into India's history to uncover the many layers of religion, caste and creed. Her quest leads her to the many parallels in the narratives between the past and the present and she gradually finds that though much has changed in Indian society over the centuries, much remains the same. The second historical novel by celebrated Kannada author S.L. Bhyrappa, translated for the first time into English by Sandeep Balakrishna, Aavarana: The Veil raises pertinent and searching questions about religion, liberalism and identity and highlights the importance of unshackling oneself from the bonds of false knowledge.
Book Features:
Raises questions and uncovers truths about religion and history
Goes deep into history to reveal the extent of tyranny by foreign invaders in India

The Kannada version was sold out even before its release in February 2007. It went into 10reprints within 5 months of its release
Aavarana The Veil price in India is ₹314.00 on 05th May 2024
