I had great hopes from this book
By Kiranon
I had great hopes from this book, having loved Eat Pray Love and being in love with the sort of things the title implied- The signature of all things. I was expecting a lot. and initially it did seem like I was going to get it all. The book is beautifully written, and covers a fascinating time in human history. It is full of thoroughly researched details on botanical discoveries and much more, and the setting and period and characters are well described. But somewhere the book did not touch many emotions in me. It was more of an intellectual exercise on the writer's part, sans soul. The trajectory of the heroine's life is marvelous, but yet in parts it left me cold. I rarely felt her feelings, her highs and her lows. Maybe she is that sort of a person. I kept hoping for more, more something to click. Right till the end. A beautifully written book, but I wanted something more.
Excellent reading material which remains with the reader after one finishes the book. I found this one better than the author's earlier travelogue cum fiction based on reality - "Eat, pray .....
A classic romance of the Austen genre
By DoonOracleon
A beautiful and romantic novel built around the scientific passion of a nineteenth century botanist. So true-to-life that I had to check whether she really existed. She didn't -- more's the pity. A huge step over her "Eat, Pray, Love".
Love. Elizabeth Gilbert is a profound writer
By April F Cornellon
A much more profound book than Eat, Pray, Love. Elizabeth Gilbert is a profound writer. To me this fits with the thinking of A Secret Life of Plants.
one of the finest novel in the recent past

About the Book :
5 January 1800.
At the beginning of a new century, Alma Whittaker is born into a perfect Philadelphia winter. Her father, Henry Whittaker, is a bold and charismatic botanical explorer whose vast fortune belies his lowly beginnings as a vagrant in Sir Joseph Bankss Kew Gardens and as a deck hand on Captain Cooks HMS Resolution. Almas mother, a strict woman from an esteemed Dutch family, has a knowledge of botany equal to any mans.
It is not long before Alma, an independent girl with a thirst for knowledge, comes into her own within the world of plants and science. But as her careful studies of moss take her deeper into the mysteries of evolution, the man she comes to love draws her in the opposite direction into the realm of the spiritual, the divine and the magical. She is a clear-minded scientist; he is a Utopian artist. But what unites this couple is a shared passion for knowing a desperate desire to understand the workings of this world and the mechanisms behind all of life.
The Signature of All Things is a big novel, about a big century. It soars across the globe from London, to Peru, to Philadelphia, to Tahiti, to Amsterdam. Peopled with extraordinary characters missionaries, abolitionists, adventurers, astronomers, sea captains, geniuses and the quite mad above all it has an unforgettable heroine in Alma Whittaker, a woman of the Enlightened Age who stands defiantly on the cusp of the modern.
