Best landscape lens I have used till now.
By Subith Premdason
I am an amateur in photography, so my review might not contain lot of technical terms and statements. Till this point I relied on just kit lens and a 50mm prime. I used to get good results except when I shoot landscapes. When I use kit lens the landscape would be very dull in colors and sharpness, and when I use 50 mm prime, I get the colors and sharpness right, but the less wider frame didn't make the landscapes look good.
One day, I thought of renting a wide angle lens, just to check whether I still get bad photographs. I rented this one and I used it on a trek to Chikmagalur, Karnataka, and I was stunned by the results. I was able to capture every shot exactly how I wanted. I got the right width for an awesome composition, got the colors right, got the sharpness which really boosted my confidence in landscape photography. This lens is AF-S which means it can be auto focused with cameras which doesn't have an internal motor. The focusing is very fast and accurate.
10mm was too wide for my requirement at the hill station. Most of the photos I took were in the 15-24mm range. For some photos, I felt a need to zoom a little bit more in, to get the composition right. But when I went to shoot sunset at a lake, then wider angles came in handy. Remember, since it is a DX lens, the actual focal length is 15-36mm.
One of the problem I found with this lens is the distortion at corners at 10mm. But it can be easily corrected in post processing. Also the build quality is not that great for a ~60K lens. I wanted to reduce 1 star in my rating for these factors but somehow I don't feel like doing, because I am that much satisfied with the quality of the photos I got from it.
Although this lens is outstanding as per me, I am still skeptical whether to buy it or not since I might be upgrading to a full frame in maybe an year or two. The price is ~60k which you should keep in mind before investing on DX lenses.
