under rated speakers.
By Prathamesh Sawanton
hey there folks, just bought these babies from lammy, writing a review since there arent many on the net abt this, ok, lets start
note( this review is just a casual one, so please take it with a grain of salt,
i was searching for some good speakers within a budget of 3-4k, and had narrowed down my choices to edifier c2 and p3060, but then, on reaching lammy, i got very bad notions abt the brand, as no one wanted to stock these , even sony d4, d5 were in contention but on listeing to how bad they are, gave up on them,
even the altec lansings werent available, and i didnt want to risk it with F&Ds, still, for some reason i took the plunge and bought the f680..
1)first impressions,
the vocals were FLAT, bass wasnt anywhere near , and was a bit disappointed with the full range driver in the satellites (no where near my old altec lansings BXR1221's satellites in terms of freq range)
2)after some burn in (2 weeks and 70 hours of burining )
WOW, these just blew my mind, seriously, the way the sound stage change, from being very RAW to a crisp with good amount of bass.
the satellites were the best part, i absolutely love them now, i played flac files on the foobar player, before and after the burn in , and there was a noticable difference with them, youtube videos and 1080p BR rips on VLC were played,
i generally like the sound to be crisp with a bit of bass, and it did satisfy me :).
coming to the sub-woofer, well, my opinion is, it's way powerful, i mean, i really cant go up more than 70% on it, the bass after the burn in period is good, but not great, In terms of being tight, and it sets in a bit late, i gues above 18hz , it doesnt go low , if You are a bass head, and just want to fill a 1000sqft open area , just go for it , coz it just shakes stuff in my room. but if you are looking for the excellence in bass, look elsewhere,
and yes one more thing, the sound you hear sitting in front within a 4-10 ft range is great, but as you move out, there is a definite drop , so keep that in mind if you are hoking it up to a TV ...the bass remains good overall recommended for Movies and games, not so much so for music
the sub isnt a looker , though the satellites may be too small for some, i like them alot, they can be wall mounted with the holes provided :)
the dealer promised me "ON-site warranty support " within the mumbai circle, i.e. if they happend to break down, a person from F&D would come to my place to pick them up (hope they never break down :P)
there is a volume controller included which does the job, there is one more volume control on the sub alongwith a BASS control,
on the volume control which is placed on my desk, there is also a headphone jack which was a good add-on
Setting up was a 2 min job, nothing complex, the wires from satellites to the Sub are pretty short, around 5ft (not a problem when using on a desktop)
Note: If you want one of the best 2.1s, well, these arent the ones :P . ofcourse, they start from 7-8k and abv, for those who are quite limited on budget, for 3.5k , they are totally worth it, but do audition for speakers if you have specific needs (thou you wont get much difference in this range, most will sound similar to untrained ears)
avoiding logitech would be good if you want some power in your setup, and the new creative t3130 arent really good of a deal.
p.s. used a Asus Xonar DG , iphone 4s , samsung galaxy S advance and samsung LCD tv to see how they fare overall. headphones(steelseries siberia) were tested on the headphone jack of the speakers as well as Front audio. the audio was fine till 90% with not much drop on tv's output, there was certainly a drop in driving them via Iphone whereas samsung galaxy was just a tab better. battlefield 3 sounds great :)
for me currently the Best 2.1's under 3.5k range, Bought them from lammy at 3.3k.
final conclusion
Bass : 6.5-7/10..... for bassheads : 9/10
treble: 7.5/10 (it's just abt fine for me )
soundstage : warm and crisp with bass meter on 40%
satellites : 17.5watts for single one , idk but are frankly the best thing about this speaker set,
Sub: was expecting better but not bad at all. very loud, very very loud . if you LOVE bass, just BUY them .
thanks
