A celebrated Franciscan painter, architect, and engineer. Was a pupil of Civerchio, and worked at Milan from about 1484 to 1520, when he died.--Zani: Enciclop. XV. et XVI. Called Master Simon of Bruges. Became a member of the Guild of St. John and St. Luke at Bruges, the Guild of Illuminators, in 1508. His father's name appears on the accounts in 1487 and 1500 as Alexander. Simon had a sister Cornelia. He was born at Antwerp, and was living there at the beginning of the sixteenth century, but frequently went to Bruges to sell his illuminations. In 1508 he became, as aforesaid, enrolled in the guild, but soon left the town. He returned in 1512, and again in 1516, and eventually fixed his residence there in 1518. From 1516 to his death, his name appears regularly in the accounts as a contributor or annual member. He had five children, of whom the eldest was Lievine, married to George Teerlinc, a townsman of Blankenburgh. The statement ...
