David Copperfield is a powerful novel written by the illustrious author Charles Dickens. If you are one of those who love entertainment rather than substance, this book may not be for you. But if you love substance more than entertainment, this book is for you. Nevertheless, i don't intend to mean that this book lacks entertainment; for it's as entertaining as it is wholesome. This book has substance- unperverted truth, visioned, at most instances, from as neutral a position that's possible. And Dickens is far better than many other authors I have read, especially those, whose prejudiced ideas on life and relationships has always made me sick. Nevertheless, even Dickens misses the mark at times.
Many of his reflections in this book are really deep and wonderful, and some of them have just seared themselves in my memory indelibly. For instance, thoughts like
"A mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart", and
"Mature affection, homage, devotion, does not easily express itself. Its voice is low. It is modest and retiring, it lies in ambush, waits and waits. Such is the mature fruit. Sometimes a life glides away, and finds it still ripening in the shade." are simply beautiful.
Dickens can easily move you to tears in certain scenes in this book, like those which expound Mr. Peggotty's unwavering love for his step daughter Emily, or the one in which Steerforth's mother breaks down before his corpse.
This book is, at a length, a wholesome book, which will not leave you unsatisfied.“David Copperfield” was Charles Dickens favorite among all his novels may be because of its autobiographical resonances which makes the work doubly fascinating. I found this book notable due to the deep unifying threads running throughout the book. David Copperfield is more or less an autobiography of Charles Dickens life. The book is divided into two basic parts - David as a boy and David the mature man. This book is Long but vivid, full of wonderful characters and excellent scenes. Beginning with David’s birth, his father dies before his birth. His mother Elizabeth and he shares a close bond until Elizabeth marries Mr. Murdstone who is mean and tries to dominate the son-mother relation. Later, Elizabeth dies during child birth. Mr. Murdstone sends him to London to work at a blacking factory. He graduates and years after he meets Dora and gets marries to her. But soon she dies. David’s personal life is always disturbed and so professional. But the book has happy end … David marrying Agnes his good friend. For me, the most engrossing part of the story is David’s childhood. Dickens has narrated the story beautifully with brilliant old British language style. Dickens presents the serious story with some comic notes also. David Copperfield has ever remained a Best Read.
