Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...increased death rate for th8se ages, knowing their greater capacity for contributions, they have profited thereby in a greater influx of young members-their sons and daughters-whose death rates and resulting assessment rates appear to be appreciably lower than those of New England throughout the range of life from 18 to 44, notwithstanding our curtailed age limit, which has signally failed to produce a lower death rate for New England societies, except in those ages we "taboo" (45 to 54) while increasing our "average age" 2.78 years over that of the National societies, and reducing our "duration of membership" to 10.73 years while the 27 societies enjoy 11.25 years of contributive life. All the important points in this comparison are against New England as a field of operations under our system of management. We who are yet living, are unconsciously prone to imagine that those who have "passed on,"have-because of their passing-contributed much less of "duration" than we who are left; but in the great scheme of life, of which this 10-year-period is but characteristic of what is taking place continuously, and in any. other 10-year-period, we see that the "duration" of the living is on the same plane with that of the deceased: Viz: In New England, 20,572 deceased members gave an average contributive life of 10.65 years each In New England, 1,481,038 aggregated living members gave an average contributive life of 10.73"" and in 27 societies 14,336,207 aggregated living members gave an average contributive life of 11.25"" We have used the term "doubtful expedients" as being applied by those who were supposed to serve us in the capacity of physicians or surgeons.
