Good replacement for 4000.

By Puja Goelon
Bought this keyboard to replace my ms 4000. This keyboard is pretty comfortable and chick let style keys make it easier on the fingers. It works nicely with my MacBook pro.Am giving 1 star less because it was delivered in a plan cardboard box without any branding and documentation.

One of the best ergonomic keyboards. But, read this before you buy.

I wanted to buy this from Amazon but since it's not sold directly and no-one responded to my question about shipping time, I ended up buying this from a different site. One of the benefits of that however turned out to be that I bought the model with the mouse included. However, for my review I am not including the mouse, since only this model is available via Amazon. This is a long review, which I hope can help you in deciding because it's one very expensive keyboard.First things first, have owned all the models of Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard from the first Natural Elite to USB 4000, Wireless Desktop 6000 and now this. And the reason for it was a wrist pain, which started early because of my long hours on the computer; spending almost 16 hours for the last two decades. And since, I have owned these keyboards I have had very little pain, even after long stretches. So, If you are thinking of buying an ergonomic keyboard, you are making a right decision to get one, which ever one you get.The Good+ The best ergonomic keyboard you can buy; that's from the person who has used all the previous ones. This particular keyboard is very comfortable and in all ways better from the earlier generations.+ Smaller. The keyboard is smaller and lighter to carry in a backpack if you need to. Because, it's smaller than other ergonomic keyboards, if you use a mouse there is very little arm travel required.+ Magnetic. The battery tray and riser are all magnetic, so it's easy when you need to replace batteries or unhook the riser.+ Very little click noise. The previous keyboards were noisier compared to this one. The softer keys help.+ Laptop like keys. Compared to the previous gen keyboards, this model has keys like a Laptop, spaced out.+ Separate NUM pad. To a lot of people this is a downer, for me I like it. I rarely use it and it makes the keyboard smaller. And if you need to do lots of calculations, the separate NUM pad means it can be conveniently used on your lap.The Bad- Import. This keyboard is not sold directly and I doubt Microsoft will ever. This means, you will likely not get any warranty if it goes bad, which is important since the keyboard is expensive. When I got this keyboard, two of the keys were slightly sticky, but since I couldn't really send it back, I just fixed it on my own. But you may not be able to. If that worries you just get the USB 4000 model or the Desktop 6000 wireless model (if you can find it).- Takes time to get used to this keyboard. I have owned all previous ergonomic keyboards but it still took me some time to get used to this one; largely because the keyboard is smaller and changed position of some keys. Not to mention the split numerical keypad, which can be tricky at times.- Function Keys not compatible with Mac. I use this keyboard with a Mac, where only a few of the function keys like the Volume controls work; rest of the keyboard works fine. Needless to say if you are on Windows everything works. Now, if you haven't used an ergonomic keyboard it will take some time to get used to it. It will also slow down your typing a bit, I went from 121 words to 91 words per minute, but it's not a big deal. If you think it's stupid to spend this much money on keyboard, let me tell you if you ever get RSI/Carpal Tunnel it's going to be way costly to fix it (most will require corrective surgery) and it stays with forever. If you code/or spend long hours, please get one; it's worth every penny.Update:The keyboard is still going strong after about a two months. However, there is a problem you would need to know; sticky keys. It seems at times the function keys do stick, which will drain your battery fast, mine drained in one week. It's a known problem with this keyboard and a good tap fixes them, at least I haven't had the problem again.I was also reading some other reviews here and I thought I could make some comments on them.1. Don't overpay for this keyboard. This keyboard is not worth 9 or 10K. Don't pay over Rs.6000 or more than Rs.7000 for the mouse/keyboard combo. You might as well get the Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 (the USB model). Even at that price it's expensive but if you are thinking of this keyboard and if you can afford it, it's worth it.2. This keyboard takes sometime to get used to, more when you have been using another ergonomic keyboard because of the layout and the difference in keys. I use the Mac keyboard quite bit as well so this now seems natural. But, I did struggle for a while. Ergonomics wise this is better since there is more key travel and you will not feel different when you have to use the laptop keyboard.3. Seperate num pad. Absolutely love it, it makes the whole setup more ergonomic because the mouse is closer to you so the wrist and arm movement is better. Of course, if you are constantly punching numbers it's better as well.4. Missing media keys. Yup they are missing, but it's easy to program the function keys to do that. In my case I was hardly using it, only for muting and increasing volume and that became a no problem as well when I started using the HDMI audio through monitor. With all the above said, I still maintain that it is one of the best you can get. I hardly see any reason to go back to my Ergonomic 7000, which is now a standby in case I need to go back.---I hope this review was helpful and if it was please click Yes below. It encourages me to write more such reviews :)

Bad experience

By Imranon
Not better than 4000.Right space bar does not translate to space key always. I have to press it at specific location. This results in break in my typing and is very irritating experience.

Much more fancy than ergonomic - for traditional "Natural Keyboard" users a disappointment.

By Christian Hujeron
I'm a user of ergonomic keyboards since almost two decades now. I've started with a Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort and Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro, and later changed to Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 due to unavailability of the ergonomic Logitech products. Throughout this review I will mostly compare this keyboard, which I will refer to as Sculpt, with the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, which I will refer to as MNK4K.Description: The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard is an ergonomic keyboard which seems to replace the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 / 7000 in Microsoft's product line of input devices. It has a split, curved layout designed to reduce unnatural angles in your wrists, arms and shoulders while your typing. As with all ergonomic keyboards, this is meant to be good for your health because it reduces the risk of RSI and similar illnesses.Good things first:+ The Sculpt function keys have double meaning, as with the MNK4K. The switch for that has been turned from an electronic switch with led into a mechanical switch, which in my opinion is an improvement.+ The wrist rest feels good, the keyboard is stiff and feels of higher quality than the MNK4K.+ The MNK4K often had quality problems regarding the space bar. This has been solved in the Sculpt by providing a split space bar key.+ The Caps Lock key is distanced from the A, which disarms this most annoying of all keys to some extent. I wish Microsoft would have been even more courageous and made the distance even bigger.+ The lid of the battery compartment is closing magnetic. No mechanical stress, therefore no breaking of the lid. Brilliant.+ The wrist stand below the wrist rest also attaches magnetic. Now the bad things.- Compared to the MNK4K, the Sculpt keys are like laptop keys. The push distance of the Sculpt keys is much less than with a MNK4K. However, the resistance of the Sculpt keys is only so little less than with a MNK4K. The end of the way also feels less damped than with an MNK4K. All this causes much more unwanted forces applied to the fingers while typing, and for long typing sessions as an author makes the Sculpt much worse than the MNK4K.- The function keys are not normal keys but for design reasons very different. As a developer, I frequently use keys like ESC (switch mode in vi(m) or cancel dialog), or other function keys to access various features of my IDE. The Sculpt is horrible for that. Quite often, I cannot feel whether I actually typed ESC nor not.- The arrangement of the movement keys is very unusual and it takes some time to get accustomed to it.- The separate number block cannot be attached to the main keyboard. Because of that, you end up with the number block always changing position relative to the main keyboard, which is very annoying when you're doing accounting and similar things where typing numbers with the number block instead of the normal number keys is more convenient.- The main region of the keyboard is glossy black, which gives disturbing reflections and although it's good looking this is definitively not ergonomic for your eyes (high contrast).- Although good looking, the space in the middle of the keyboard should've been used. Of course not by normal keys, the arrangement of the keys as it is is the whole point of the ergonomic keyboard. However, the space could've been used in some creative way.- Compared to the MNK4K, there are much fewer keys. All the media keys are missing, as are the back/forward navigation keys in the wrist rest.- The wrist stand below the wrist rest could have used 2 more magnets to attach better to the wrist rest. Conclusion: The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard is much more a fancy gadget than a serious input device. This is very sad because it's really fancy. But when you're typing a lot, like an author, accountant or programmer, fanciness doesn't count. Ergnomics count. And if you mistype your numbers because the numberpad slips way or the escape key doesn't work properly, the keyboard is just getting on your nerves, and fanciness doesn't pay for that. It's said "form follows function". For the Sculpt, the motto obviously was "function follows form", which is totally stupid for an ergonomic keyboard. If you need a fancy gadget, go for it. If you need a serious ergonomic keyboard, don't waste your money on it, instead stick with the Natural Keyboards or the products from competitors.
