Hi Shoppers, I have got HP LaserJet M1005 Monochrome Multifunction Printer and used it, Here is my review on it.
The printer is as big as it’s name, and its got a truckload of features. You can print, scan & copy with this machine (almost all MFPs do this, by the way. So the features aren’t actually a ‘truckload’). It does pretty much everything required that is related to your basic printing needs.
--------------------------
DETAILED PROS
--------------------------
*****************
Multi Function
*****************
Gone are the days when you needed to have a printer, scanner and a photocopier. This printer handles all of that. It’s got a built-in scanner, and that makes it a photocopier too. You can scan and copy any document from even a small card to an A4 sized sheet. It isn’t one of those heavy-duty photocopying machines you find in stationery shops. It handles sheets upto A4 size comfortably. Whether you need to scan a business card, a document or a photo, it handles all of that. And, let’s not forget that it prints too. Its a monochrome printer, so there’s no colour printing option. You can print practically anything from maps to pictures to text, and you get a wonderful monochrome (more commonly known as back-and-white) printout.
********************
Laser Technology
********************
This is a laser printer, don’t underestimate it. It gives the best quality output you can imagine from a grayscale printer, and when you compare a page of text printed by an inkjet printer to this, you’ll realize why people say laser printers are the best. The prints don’t smudge like when you touch an inkjet print. They remain good for long. If you have selected a good picture which isn’t pixelated, you can see that laser printers actually give really good output. And that’s why these printers are high-priced when compared to inkjets.
************************
Display and Controls
************************
The printer has a small display at the top right, along with many buttons. These buttons allow you to easily adjust the no. of copies, brightness and other settings. You don’t have to sit copying the same page 10 times if you want 10 copies. Just press the button, and you’re done. You get the 10 copies in a jiffy. And that’s what brings us to the next point.
**************
Functionality
**************
The printer’s got lots of functions. More than you’ll ever use. You can specify the no. of copies, brightness ans set the defaults for these parameters. That makes it easy to print at brightness level 6 or so every time. You can make a specific change only for one load, for example you can print 4 copies only for the current load. When you power up the printer again, it goes back to 1 copy.
*********
Design
*********
The printer looks good, and has everything positioned correctly, with nothing as an obstruction. Build quality is good too, and it doesn’t look like it will wear off over time. On the sides, you have the HP logo. On the front, you have the sheet input tray and the output area thing. The scanner is placed at the top, and you can easily place a document there and scan it, with the copies coming down below. Even the LCD display and the buttons are placed on top. On the back, you have the USB and power ports.
***********
Software
***********
The printer comes with a software CD that makes it easy to print, scan and copy. You don’t need to look around for the driver on the internet. Just install the software, and you get all the required utilities for printing and scanning. The scanning software has a neat and nice user interface, which makes it easy to scan and set parameters such as DPI, position, brightness, contrast and others. It even asks you whether you have another page to scan after the current scan is complete.
*******************
Colour Scanning
*******************
Though this is a monochrome printer, it can scan in colour to your PC. Just open the software, place the document in the scanner and hit ‘Scan’. You’ll get the colour output on your monitor in a few seconds.

CONS

*******
Price
*******
That’s the main downside to these printers. This is a little old model, so you can get it for around Rs. 11,000 – 12,000. If you are on a budget, then forget about this printer. You can check out other models, especially the P1007 which I’m reviewing next week. It is just a printer, and is enough for household use. But, if you have a small office, I would recommend this model, as it is one of the ‘cheaper’ options available in the MFP category.
********
Toners
********
All printers require either ink or toner cartridges to function. Ink cartridges are the cheaper of the 2, and give a lower yield. Toner cartridges are really expensive, and each original HP cartridge can cost upto 4,000. You get one with the printer, which yields about 1,500-2,000 pages. Later on, you need to get a toner cartridge for the next 3-4,000 pages. They are really expensive, and you don’t know
