A Masterpiece from Canon.... great service by Amazon India
By Subramanya C Kon
Canon MP E-65 is an extreme Macro lens from Canon. There are ample reviews and videos on the Internet that give a lot of insight into this amazing lens. I don't attempt to add my few cents to this already existing huge database of information...But my views on this lens..1. Buy this if and only if you have already worked with other general purpose macro lenses Like Canon 100mm, 180mm, Sigma 150mm etc., for a good period of time.. else you will regret your purchase.. I had used Canon 100mm for more than a year2. If you have experimented doing reverse ring macro, then you are straight away qualified to buy this lens !!3. A goof tripod and a very good flash are very essential with this lens... Yes hand holding the lens is possible till 2X magnification, buy beyond that its impossible..4. Buy this lens only if you are seriously interested in extreme Macro. Regular macro like an entire butterfly/flower in the frame etc.. is NOT POSSIBLE !!Downsides of the lens.... Hmm I am yet to figure out them... IMO this is the most perfect lens for extreme macro.. with no alternateNow coming to the delivery of Amazon--- it's superb as usual;./ I got the product in perfectly packed condition and warranty cards from. The seller 10Downingstreet had prepared the package very nicely and safely. And most importantly I got my shipment 2 days before the schedule !! Thank you Amazon...
It starts where all other Macro lenses stop...
By Aditya ASVon
MP-E 65mm, a very specialized Macro lens from Canon. I like what the website says about the product... "It starts where other macro lenses stop", and it pretty-much summarizes the product. Normal macro lenses can reproduce 1:1 magnification at the max, but this lens beats them all. [and not to mention, there are no such lenses in Nikon lineup, making it undisputed king of Macro]
Pros:
[1] A very specialized lens.
[2] Has mind boggling 5 times the real size magnification... roughly translated, if the object in real life is 1mmx1mm, then at its max macro, the image size on the sensor will be 5mmx5mm.
[3] Great for photographing very very small insects and small flowers. Has the ability to show even the pollen grains very very distinctly.
Cons:
[1] Manual focusing only. Has no Autofocus motor.
[2] The lens barrel extends like crazy at max magnification.
[3] View finder gets very dark as you ramp up the magnification ,making it Very very difficult to focus it hand held using viefinder.
[4] You must use a flash or other external light to get decent images, else leave all the hopes on getting anything on your sensor.
[5] Depth of field at 5X is 0.05mm at an effective aperture of f/16. No human hand can be that precise enough to focus, but there are some tools to aid us [Macro focussing rails]
Putting the negative things aside, the images that this baby churns out are mind blowing...And can make you forget all the pains you have endured to get that sweet shot.
I personally do not own this lens(ain't that rich enough... yet!). Heck, that is the reason why I'm sitting and typing all this. Had I got this miracle in my hands, I'd be out-doors shooting every darn thing that moved/crawled.
In conclusion, if you can spare the amount this lens demands, go ahead and buy it...and you'd surely not regret it.
