A pretty good espresso machine

By Nagaraj Pudukotaion
This is a pretty good espresso machine except for its price. The same machine is available in the US for $85 which is about 60% less than the price we pay for this here in India. Unfortunately we don't have a choice. Now coming to the quality of espresso this machine delivers, here is my take. I grind my coffee beans just before I use the powder to make my espresso. That ensures the flavour of my espresso. The coarseness/fineness of the ground coffee is one of the key components in making a good espresso. I ensure that the powder is a little more finer than table salt. The next thing to watch out for the tamping of the powder in the porta filter. This machine has a pressurised prota filter, so you should do very light tamping and avoid hard tamping as you would do with a non-pressurised porta filter. The reason is the back pressure that is created due to the spring loaded porta filter is enough and any hard tamping we do manually to the coffee powder in the filter will hamper the quality and quantity of espresso that flows out of the machine. I fill the porta filter to about 80% of its capacity with coffee powder. I am still fine tuning the amount of tamping that would ensure a consistent espresso from this machine. It is still a 50:50 with me. If I manage the right amount of tamping, this machine has delivered good espresso. Coming to the build quality of the machine, the exterior body is all plastic (other than the porta filter of course) which is a let down considering its price. I don't steam the milk using the Panarello on the machine, instead I boil it on a stove top. This is my personal preference.

Good Crema from a Philips Saeco Espresso Coffee Maker

By Anupam Jaloteon
This is a very good machine that makes wonderful crema (espresso shots) and if you are skillful and have good, cold milk, it can also make good milk foam for your cappuccino. A coffee enthusiast, over the past decade I have been on the quest to make consistently good coffee. I used a Morphy Richards cappuccino machine for 8 years before purchasing this Saeco from Philips. This machine is clearly far superior. I get cappuccino that is better than most of the dishwater served as cappuccino in Costa's or Cafe Coffee Day. I must confess that it took me some time to get used to the nuances of this machine, and so for the first month, I made terrible coffee, and now after six months, I can get this Saeco to make excellent crema 9 time out of 10. How to use this to make good crema: This is a pressurised machine, so if you follow the following steps, you will end up with excellent crema. (Crema is basically the black coffee that come out, WITH a layer of coffee foam on top. It is this foam that adds to the creamy texture of a good cup of coffee). 1. Use coarse ground coffee beans. (In case you have fine grounds, then do NOT pack it in tightly into the filter.) 2. Use the flat back surface of the coffee measuring spoon provided with the machine to tamp down the coffee power into the filter. The best way to do this is to first fill up coffee power to half centimeter from the top of the filter. Then sprinkle some grains of common salt on the top (this increases the flavour of the coffee). Now put the flat part of the measuring spoon onto the top of the coffee powder and press down firmly with the heel of your hand, and then while pressing, give it a quarter turn. 3. Now load the filter onto the machine and turn the central knob to wards the coffee mark to get wonderful crema coming out NOTE: The manual tells you that the handle of the coffee filter will automatically turn to the left but in a new machine the handle fits very tightly, and may not turn. Do not worry. As you use the machine, this fitting becomes smoother and the handle starts to move back automatically. 4. I recommend that you use two glass / ceremic containers to collect the crema. As the coffee crema starts to come out, it will be almost dark brown to black in colour. Collect the first 5 seconds worth in one cup and the quickly replace it with the second one, into which you can allow the crema to pour till it turns into a light brown colour. The first cup will have the rich, thick, oily crema, which makes an AMAZING espresso shot should you like to drink pure espresso. It is best taken in small sips, and roll it in your mouth to allow all the complex flavours to com out. This machine does make some amazing crema! The second cup has the more diluted flavours and can be used for cappuccino. NOTE: PLEASE REMOVE THE SPENT COFFEE AND WASH THE FILTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, OTHERWISE YOUR NEXT CUP WILL SMELL OF STALE COFFEE, AND THAT IS TERRIBLE. How to make good foam: Pray that you have good milk. My experience is that Amul Milk is consistently better quality than others. But use whatever you have. Try to use full cream milk, straight from the packet, without boiling. Cold milk makes better foam. If your milk is not making foam, the quality of milk is inferior. Do the following: a) add some powder milk / dairy whitener to the milk before foaming it b) or add some desi ghee to the milk before foaming it Try not to let the milk heat up too much. A good measure is to make foam in a steel container, and let the milk heat up till container is just too hot to hold. That is about 70 degrees centigrade, which is what you want. All the best!

Excellent coffee but one cup at a time

By Sumit Jainon
This is the entry level machine. Anything below this machine is just a joke. I was using a Morphy Richard machine which was a pain to get good coffee. In this machine, Coffee has a good crema. And the milk has good micro bubbles. This machine is a lot better than me expectations. I am using this with ground Cafe Coffee Day beans.

The beginners choice for a budget Espresso machine

By L Gurunathan on
The saeco Poemia gives you pretty good espresso. The steam wand is not up to what I was expecting, as am still not satisfied with its microfoam. It could be me. However the overall experience is good and one can make a morning cup of cappuchino pretty fast in less than 7 minutes. I grind my coffee everyday and hence it takes a couple of more minutes extra. Please note that, the pressurised filter makes tamping unnecessary and sort of compensates for poor grinding. The cup warmer on the top is a passive cup warmer and is of little practical use. Also it can give you only one cup at a time (which is normal for any espresso machine) and might need a few minutes time before the next cup. Those purchasing this product should carefully read the instructions and follow them especially when using it for the first time. I thank Flipkart for replacing my unit pretty fast as I found the earlier unit defective. The actual risk here that it is sold by Philips which in my experience has a notorious after sales service record. My service inquiries to them with respect to the steam wand are yet to be answered. But I will gladly recommend this machine to any espresso lover.

Amazing espresso shots for an entry level machine

By Amazonian Dudeon
This machine can pull really great espresso shots.Get your beans ground fresh, pack it a bit tight in the portafilter and you have the cafe quality espresso. The pannarello is not that great for the micro foam, but you can still have a good latte without the 'art' :)

Horrible product, highly unreliable and lousy Philips service

By ADARSHon
Horrible product, highly unreliable and lousy Philips service. Would not recommend to even an enemy. I had been using Black and Decker coffee machine for about 10 years without any issue. Thought it was time for change and hence order this one since it looked good and comes from well known brand. The froth makers stopped working within 2 months. I have been trying to reach philips customer care and only way to reach is through their toll free number. Though toll free, I have remained waiting on the line for 'busy customer care representatives' to pick the phone, but horribly no success. It is highly frustrating and disappointing to be facing such lousy service from such a reputed brand.

Best Machine............

By MIRZA AAMIR BEGon
If you are a coffee lover than it is the best product. You can make Expresso and cappuccino in the home itself. If yo are going to CCD and Barista to spend a lot of Bucks in coffee, so this coffee machine is best for you.But be prepare for costlier coffee powder, because for this machine you have to spend 600 rs (minimum) per 250 gm you have to spend on coffee powder. This machine is create 2 glass at one time and you have to spend 10 min. to prepare it for Expresso. If you are preparing for your guest (4 to 10 people) to prepare a coffee, so please dont do that, because it waste your 1 hour for preparing this.Pros:Best coffeeGood priceEven you can prepare cream alsoCons:Coffee powder is costlyOnly prepare 2 coffee at a timeYou have to waste much coffee powder to prepare coffee.

Satisfied

By Manavendra Con
I'm enjoying my cappuccino. Though the espresso is not that concentrated, it depends on the grind as mentioned in the manual. It takes time to find the most suitable grind. This machine is suitable for making just 2 coffee. The foaming of milk is superb. No issued with the quality of coffee and performance as of now.

It's a really nice entry level machine

By Soma Vijon
Well priced. It's a really nice entry level machine. The extract is good. The milk frother won't do micro frothing but is decent. I enjoyed this machine for 2 years and then upgraded to a better one. I still use this machine in my weekend home and it continues to serve good coffee.
