Another Motorola Marvel

By Rohit Jainon Mar 30, 2016 12:00:00 AM
Hello Friends,I am writing this review after three months of usage. Consider buying it if you find my review helpful.Design and build:You all know it boasts IP67 Dust and Water Resistant which is a good feature esp at this price point and if you open the cover you can see most part of the phone is packed, just sd card slot and sim card slots are visible. Its 4.97" screen is protected by Gorilla glass, which prevents scratches and shatters. Looks wise it is quite an attractive phone, its back cover provides good grip too, volume buttons are smooth to press and placed well. At 155gms, it is a little heavy than normal.Screen resolution is 720p but it is OK regarding its screen size. Also, the screen size is 4.97" but as the phone buttons are itself part of the screen so the effective screen area also gets reduced.Camera:Hmm.. The camera is the thing that can be deciding factor for a phone purchase. Initially, I was not happy with the camera and at first glance, I hated its stock camera app.. focusing was not good, night shots were horrible, daylight shots were not impressing, but after I updated the camera app and the system to Marshmallow the real camera performance came up.Let me clear that it is not a very good camera and like many other phones it performed well in daylight, macros were fine, HDRs were also decent, but it suffers at night, in low light, it gives average results but under its dual led flash it managed to give some good clicks. The Camera did not produce good results with the pictures having too many details. So Moto g Turbo camera is overall good but it gives the mixed results with different shooting conditions.Software:The software part is the thing, I love about moto phones. You get the latest android, pure android, bloat free android and a lovable android.Motorola did not even use its customized home, it is packed with Google's own Now Launcher with no customization at all.Having lollipop pre-installed it is upgradeable to latest Marshmallow.--- UPDATE- It is confirmed that it is not getting Android Nougat. But no need to be disappointed, Android N in not a very major update over its predecessor. So don't worry much. :) ---I am personally a fan of stock android but there are still some things which can be offered with stock. Its stock camera app seems too basic at first glance but actually, it is not that bad. You can lock the focus by holding the focus dial or you can burst capture (with normal speed) by holding the tap on the screen. But it let you shoot photos only at high resolution (9.7MP for 16:9 and 13MP for 4:3) and for video 1080p.The most interesting part of the camera is that it can shoot slow motion videos at 720p resolution at 15fps with some quality deterioration. Try this feature, I loved it and you might also love it. 5MP Front camera is also good for selfies.Performance:You all know it comes with upgraded octa-cores processor (from quad cores of Moto G 3rd Generation (Black, 16GB)) and 2gigs of RAM. Performance is quite satisfactory and you will not suffer from any sluggishness although I faced occasional freezing of some apps for one-two seconds.I will not write down any benchmark test results here but keep in mind that if performance is your priority then this phone will not disappoint you at least with an average number of apps installed.Gaming is also fine even with Graphics heavy games thanks to upgraded GPU and CPU.RAM usage at the time of very first usage of phone was ~800MB and after 20 days when I got to installed all my usual apps the average RAM usage hovered around 1.4GBBattery and Heating:I have heard that many guys are complaining about the heating of the back. At first, the phone supports fast charging which is nothing but increase in the flow of electrons, so it is normal to catch up some heat. But what about heating when it is not charging? It might heat with heavy continuous usages but it will not go beyond what we call normal. So don't worry about that. Its 2470mah battery will give you 12-20 hours with average usages and 08-14 hours with moderate to heavy usages. So nothing too good here but nothing bad either. But one thing is pretty good, the standby time it offers. In many smartphones, there is a problem of high charge leak esp on standby but in the case of moto G if you sleep with 80% then you wake up ~70% battery. Now how fast is charging? It is not a very fast charger if you consider it for 0'100% but it is quite a fast at initial battery percentages say till 75% it will charge your phone in mere 1 hour but afterwise the charge rate plunges substantially.I did a test to figure out the correlation between battery percentage, time and charge rate, The first 80% took 1 hour to charge but remaining 20% took sizeable 50 minutes to reach the crown of 100% percent.Miscellaneous:•GPS locks the location in minimal time and is quite precise.•The Audio output of the speakers is loud and clear but headphone output is average in terms of quality.•Call quality is good but not the best I have seen.•Signal reception is fine.Pros:•Full marks in design and build quality•Good grip•Water and dust resistant•Smooth performance•Pure Android experience and timely system updates•Fast Charging•Fast shutter speed of camera•Speakers situated at front and are sufficiently loud•No bloating of apps•Upgradable to Marshmallow•Respectable standby time on battery•Overall a stable experienceCons:•Mixed Camera performance•Sometimes battery dies out fast with heavy usage (but the fast charging does compensate it well)•The 720p display has a little warmish tone but again not to bother you.•It misses out some basic sensors like compass and gyroscope (This means you can't turn ON AR mode in Pokémon GO :/ ).•Camera app does not have some manual functions like exposure compensation, ISO control, shooting modes, lighting, and no chances of rare focus control dial ( We noticed you Moto G4 ;) ).•No unread count badges and one touch multitask-windows killer button•No USB cable in the box•Average headphone output•Missing notification LED lightSo Bottomline is -Motorola Moto G Turbo is overall quite a good package. But aggressive pricing is the thing that is letting it down. I got this phone for a discounted price and I am happy. If you are able to buy this phone under 11k or 10.5k (discounts) then prefer buying it esp if you want something branded, sturdy, good looking, weatherproof and with a stable software experience.-----------------Every phone has its period of existence(not stocks availability) after which it gets outdated and new devices take place of that budget segment and generally, it applies to 1-1.5 or maybe 2 years after the launching. So all reviews and decision of buying the device should be considered for that period. I think this is quite understandable.-----------------

A perfect mid-ranger. Double perfect at this price.

By Bharathon Jan 7, 2017 12:00:00 AM
I shall refrain from using over-the-board adjectives and try to be as to-the-point as possible.Perhaps one of the last phones designed by Motorola before the Lenovo takeover.Design-Is sturdy and feels solid. I personally like Motorola's design language and this is no exception.Size-Compact. I have gotten used to big flagship phones (it's the norm with all mid-rangers too nowadays) so I felt the size was a little too small especially for videos.Display- HD videos play like a dream. Clarity is not a issue at all.Software- Barring the occasional odd stutter android experience is smooth and well optimized.Camera- Front facing camera is a revelation(for me atleast!) Rear camera is very good too. Camera is certainly a plus on this phone.Sound- Front facing speaker is loud. Sound distorts and jarrs when playing rock/jazz at high volume. But that is in no way is a deal breaker. It is a nice sounding phone.Battery- Turbo-charge bonus. I have no unrealistic expectations of a day or day and a half. It certainly get's me through work.Purported heating issues- Here comes the area that caused a lot of confusion for me before zeroing in on the purchase Going by previous reviews I got a little bit scared. A lot over-blown i realize this heating trouble rant. I don't game intensively. I do messages and watch videos occasionally. The phone warms up like any other. Finally the seller "Cloudetail" - It's a great purchase for me and I do look forward to buying from you in the future. Keep up the good work. For me ,as of now (January 2017), purchase recommendation for anyone with any budget will go something like this,Moto G turbo<Moto G4 Plus<Moto X Style<Samsung Galaxy S7I had to choose between Moto G3 turbo and Moto G4(plain) and I chose Moto G3 turbo...and I am glad!P.S. The real test for any phone though is how it ages with regular use. Will definitely be back with that on this space.

Good phone POOR DISPLAY

By Vikas girdharon Jan 12, 2017 12:00:00 AM
I purchased this phone to have taste of Vanila Android, phone and software is good , but the display is over sensitive, even while scrolling the item gets clicked. I have suffered because of many missed calls to my friends/relatives because while scrolling in favorites in contacts it starts dialing the number. Ultimately I have stopped using favorite contacts and now I dial from call logs, there dialing is two stage procedure.I have tried everything including pointer speed settings to zero, but of no use.I didnot return phone because I like it.If you have any solution to this problem please mail me to drgirdhar81@gmail.com.

Good Phone, Good Hardware

By Abhishek Pon Dec 26, 2016 12:00:00 AM
It is a good phone, very good hardware and quality. There are many people reporting overheating, but I have not experienced any heating issues with my modal. If you are a fan of stock android this is a phone for you, but I am not a fan of stock android and its vertical scroll app launcher. The camera and gallery apps by Motorola are too simple and lacks many features, the camera app by default takes 1080p videos and there is no way to lower its quality, same for the photos, so you cant share those videos on WhatsApp, only way to work around this is you have to install some other camera app like Camera M or Camera for Android. The gallery app is also too basic, it has no idea about the orientation of photos taken, it just make them appear like if they all are horizontal, making pics appear rotated in thumbnails. the jpeg format saves orientation info in pics and this gallery app cant even read that. Another issues with gallery app is by default it shows folders where pics are stores instead of pics, and there is no way to change between view pics or view folder. When you insert a mem card, it shows two option - either format the card and make it readable to this phone only, this will allow moving apps to sd card or you can only use card for saving photos/videos and continue to make it readable in other devices. I always store my images/videos and other important files on SD card and in case the phone stop working, I can easily remove the sd card and give to service center. This is not a option when you choose 1st option and format the card, making it only readable to phone.Android Updates - I received multiple updates for it, and the phone is updated upto July 2016 release of android Marshmallow 6.0.1. unfortunately there is not going to be any more updates for this modal, no Android N. That is bad because my 2 year old android one is updated upto Sep 2016 patch. And this phone is Made In IndiaPros-Camera-Speed-Looks, QualityCons-Stock Android Launcher-Gallery & Camera app provided by Motorola-Cant Move apps to SD card if not formatted by phone-No more android updates
