This is a paperback question and answer book consisting of 823 multiple-choice questions based on the 14th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. The previous edition was published in 1994. This self-assessment text is primarily intended for use by internal medicine residents preparing for the American Board of Internal Medicine examination, but it would also be useful for internists or family physicians preparing for recertification, or clinicians who are interested in maintaining their knowledge of internal medicine. Internal medicine residents and practicing internists or family physicians are the intended audience. The book is grouped into 10 chapters and organized by systems, such as infectious disease, heart and vascular system, respiratory system, etc. The first part of each chapter consists of questions, and in the second section the answers are supplied with explanations of correct and incorrect answers. For each explanation, either a journal reference is provided or the applicable chapter in the textbook is supplied. The dermatologic illustrations are in full color and of extremely high quality. Surprisingly, there are very few x-rays or CAT scans. This certainly is a useful book for self-assessment that has up-to-date references, with some as recent as 1996. Most of the questions are case-based and appear of comparable difficulty to board examinations.
