nice device...

NOT value for money

By Anandmdon
Pros:- Decent network printing functionality although without iphone/ipad support- Easy setupCons:- Worst after sales support by TP-Link staff- Poorer hardware and RAM compared to similar products from Netgear and Asus- Almost none of the features such as VPN, P2P/Torrent, NAS Backup, complimentary DDNS- Poor DLNA Media functionality- DDWRT incompatible - DDWRT firmware not readily available.- Very expensive considering the hardware and features that are being offeredOther routers considered:- Asus ac68u AC1900- Netgear R7000-100INS Nighthawk AC1900- Linksys Cisco not considered due to large price differentialDetailed Review:I initially purchased the TP-Link Archer C9 before trying the equivalent Asus or the Netgear models. One thing I realized is that the Archer C9 seriously lacks the many many features available in either the Asus or Netgear. My biggest mistake was buying the Archer C9 from a local brick and mortar retailer instead of Amazon and thereby screwing up the chance of returning the product. Intended purpose was for networking at my home office to connect about 5 desktops, a PS3, a CCTV DVR connected by wire and 3 laptops and several phones and tablets connected wirelessly. Network printing for office use was also needed. Additionally I needed to connect my external HDD for accessing office related files via in home network and FTP and accessing media files for consumption on PS3 (through DLNA server) and laptops on the home front.Soon after buying the Archer C9 I had trouble accessing the DLNA media server on various devices. I tried contacting the TP-Link service center in India by phone to no avail. Since no one in India bothered responding to my phone calls, I was forced to contact the TP-Link international support site and I raised a ticket on their system. This time I got contacted by the TP-Link Engineers in China and after providing them required details, it was agreed that there definitely is some problem with their DLNA server. Over the course of several Teamviewer remote desktop sessions spanning several hours the Engineers tried their best to rectify my problem including installing beta firmware on the router. The beta firmware did not solve my DLNA server issue, but now I was unable to access my network through DDNS, something I needed for accessing CCTV security camera at home. Moreover I was not able to revert to earlier firmware. The repair attempts went on for several months and finally one day during one of the remote desktop sessions, while attempting to install a new firmware on the router, the router bricked. Thus I was asked to send the router to the local service center in Bhiwandi, India at my own cost which I did.Having spent several months on this issue and without any meaningful result, I contacted TP-Link and clarified that even with the router replacement I was looking at spending more time troubleshooting. I had already spent countless hours making my PC and network open to TP-Link tech support over remote desktop and was in no mood to spend another few months on it. Hence I asked them that I would accept a replacement router only if my issues with DLNA Server would be rectified or else they could refund my money. Initially they flat out refused to give a refund giving DLNA Server is not an advertised feature. When I showed them screenshots taken from their own website stating Media server functionality, they started making other excuses and dragging their feet. I soon realized that the Engineers and reps sitting in India service center are helpless and do not have any power over such issues. All decisions are taken by their manager Mr. Matt Li who resorts to flat out not taking phone calls and not replying to customer emails. Now after months of sending back the defective router to the Service Center, I was still waiting for a resolution. Frustrated I tried calling Matt Li from a different phone number so he won't be able to avoid my calls. He responded this time trying to get me to accept part payment and some refurbished power banks as a "gift". I disagreed to this and he said he will get back to me. Weeks went by after this phone call and after sending another barrage of emails, I got a call that my refund was approved. Sadly the refund amount would be only for the base price and will not include VAT. For people who are not familiar with retail business, this is a lame excuse. When a sale is voided, the seller is supposed to refund the VAT too. They can in turn claim credit for VAT from government in such cases. Moreover in cases of under warranty products, it is common practice to refund the entire purchase price to the customer. Anyway, I was really tired of all the phone calls and emails to TP-Link and decided to accept whatever refund was being given to me. Had I bought the router from Amazon all this hassle would had been avoided.I do need to mention that the TP-Link Engineers based in China were extremely polite and tried their best to help me out. It was the horrible attitude of the Indian service center which was a major headache for me. Once done with the Archer C9, I tried the Asus ac68u and Netgear R7000 both of which were far superior products. However I settled on Netgear R7000 since it provided better network printing support for older XP desktops than Asus ac68u. Both these routers are far superior than the Archer C9 both in terms of software and hardware are much mature devices that have been around for quite some time. Hence most of the issues/problems are already ironed out. The TP-Link Engineers are basically product testing their router at customer's expense. All this would had been fine as long as the Archer C9 was substantially cheaper than either the Netgear R7000 or the Asus ac68u. However, sadly this is not the case. In case you feel that you do not need, or even do not know about features like VPN, P2P torrents, data backup on NAS etc. then frankly there is no need to waste money on the Archer C9 when its price is quite comparable to these other superior routers. Only scenario where it makes to buy TP-Link C9 is if its being offered at about half the price of Netgear R7000. Even if there were an option to install DDWRT open source firmware on the Archer C9, it would had made the whole deal more palatable.Note on Wireless AC protocol:A lot of people seem to think that the Wireless AC standard/protocol will give them phenomenal networking and wireless video streaming speeds. This is not entirely true since most end devices do not support the AC standard at this time. You will get amazing speeds ONLY when you use two of such Wireless AC devices. For example a second wireless AC router or range extender/Access point connected to your Smart TV and accessing your primary wireless AC router. Or a newer desktop which has a Wireless AC card. Moreover your max wireless streaming speed will be dictated by the lower of these two devices. If you are not planning on such elaborate network setup at this time stick with wireless N devices and you should be fine both in terms of range and speed.TO Summarize:- Go for Asus ac68u if network printing through older PCs and printers is not a big priority for you. Open VPN as well as P2P downloading features are much better on Asus. Sans the network printing on older desktops, the Asus ac68u is best router out there in its class.- Go for Netgear R7000 if you need hassle free network printing and Airprint feature of Apple devices. The free backup software for storing backups on network storage is pretty sweet too. If you get the 3 year hardware warranty from Netgear it is even better. I bought mine during Amazon Lightning deal and found Netgear to be cheaper than Asus by about Rs. 1800/- at that time and only slightly more expensive than Archer C9- Go for TP-Link Archer C9 if you like to waste your money and conduct product testing for the benefit of manufacturer.

Poor wifi range

Not getting the wifi range been promised with this router

Very poor

By Sanjoyon
Waste of money . I was using the tplink TLMR3420 earlier . There is no improvement in range or performance n speed . Also i was using the router with WD my cloud but the video streaming was in breaks. I thought buying this modem would solve my problem but problem persists . Rather i would say the MR3420 router is 5 star n value for money .

Great Router with Superb Range on Both Bands [2.4ghz & 5Ghz]

By Ajay Kareeron
I bought it like 2 weeks ago to replace my old WRT120n which was still working fine but as most of the people uses N-type router i.e 2.4Ghz band router which produces so traffic in my area for the 2.4 ghz wifi router that result in low signals of disrupted signals. So to overcome this I wanted the 5Ghz band router and was confused in between Asus RT-AC68U, Netgear R7000 and TP-Link Archer C9. My friend has Netgear R7000 but he said it has low wifi range (2.4 ghz) if he is in another room and very very poor 5ghz range can't even connect it to if he is in the another room. Then I checked the review of the Asus RT-AC68U and it was pretty good but one drawback is that it has low 5ghz wifi range as the R7000 has, so i dropped it too. Then after hard research I bought the Tp-link Archer C9 and ohh mama it is the best router I have ever seen. Excellent wifi coverage on both the bands and thanks to beamforming technology present in this router. I have checked this router in my friends house who has the Netgear R7000 and this router beats the R7000. Pretty excellent coverage in his house on both the Bands. I connected to the 2.4ghz band and went to my house which is far block away and surprisingly i was still connected to it and that's where beamforming technology helps. Pretty amazing router with great coverage on both the bands 5/5 stars for this product. :) PS: Amazing USB 3.0 transfer speed I can share and transfer files quickly from one PC to another without connecting the USB to any Laptop or PC.

Really fast and affordable router

By Kishoron
Appreciate it for the great look and stance it has. Its really fast. I am using 2 laptops, 4 smart phones and one smart tv all connected and running at the same time. Previous router showed visible lag due to which i upgraded to this one. Now i am very happy that all the lag is gone. Inter-device data transfer is very fast, especially when i access video files on my computer and mobile devices on TV using wifi-direct. 2gz wifi signal range is extraordinary. i am able to connect from 150 mts away.

Facing issues with the speeds

By Miteshon
Dont know the reasons but I am getting terrible speeds on 5 GHz. On 2.4 its still better. Everything else is good.

Top class powerful Wifi router
