Finally arrived on 8th day, and did not get set-up. Finally d-link support told me that this does not work on AIRTEL Huawei Dongle E1731. btw, D-Link support number is one of the toughest ones to get through and a rude one to talk to. mr D-link, all buyers are not super techies....
Flipkart, please put an advisory on all these routers - CHECK YOUR DONGLE COMPATIBIITY WITH THE ROUTERS" and also provide a compatibility check table.

steps to setup
1) Connect the photon in the usb socket of the router.
2) Connect one end of the ethernet cable into the socket of the router and second end into the ethernet port of your desktop or laptop
3) Open any web browser on your computer and in the address bar type 192.168.0.1 and click enter
4) in the username field type admin and in the password field also type admin (unless you have changed the password)
6) On the main router page click on setup, click on the second option that says manual internet connection setup
7) In internet connection type, select 3g
8) In 3G internet connection type, select the following options
Dialup profile- Manual
Country- India
Telecom- Others
username- internet
password- internet
verify password- internet
dialed number- #777
authentication- auto
9) click on save settings, the router will restart in 45 seconds
10) Repeat steps 4 and 5, click on setup, go to wireless settings, manual settings
11) click on enable wireless, enter your desired network name
12) in 802.11 mode select B/G/N mixed
13) select auto channel scan, visibility status- visible.
14) security mode WPA- Personal
15) WPA mode- WPA2 only, cipher type TKIP
16) type ypur desired network key and click on save settings
17) again the browser will restart in 45 secs.
18) Your router is ready to share network

First thanks to flipkart it arrived in 3 days, the packaging was good.
The setup page of router is not very user friendly but once you go thru the menu options u can get it to work.
By default the wireless is unprotected remember to use wep/wpa to secure it.
I use MTS 3g datacard and it works like fine with this, I think Reliance will also work fine since essentially they are both the same zte cdma modems. Did not test with GSM 3G though
Works perfectly with BSNL 3G E353 Huwaei 14.4 Mbps USB modem

Worth the money.
To configure, connect a LAN cable after powering up the router ( you may also connect to the default WiFi SSID, but I haven't tried ), enter http://192.168.0.1/. Login as 'admin' user. There is no password set. You can and should do it later.
In the Setup section, The Internet connection configurations are to be done as follows.
My internet connection is: 3G
Username:
Password:
Dialled Number: *99#
Authentication: Auto
APN: bsnlnet
Reconnect mode: Auto < You might want this to be set to auto, otherwise it is a pain to login at the router management page again, and at the status page, click to Connect >
Leave rest of the configuration empty, or at their default values.
I am not filling up with WiFi configuration section, but that's typical of any other WiFi router.
There is another pocket model from D-Link which would cost just above Rs. 4000/-. It comes with a rechargeable 1700mAh battery and charging adapter. If you need this to work when you have power outage and don't have a UPS facility, then you need to opt for this pricier model. It also duals up as your phone extended battery pack if your phone supports USB charging.
I didn't find it worth spending on that high priced model, since I have UPS and won't definitely carry around a battery pack for phone. So I am happy with this model.

D-Link Firmware: V2.02
1) Connect the photon max in the usb socket of the router.

4) in the username field type admin and leave the password field blank (unless you have changed the password)
5) On the main router page click on setup, click on the second option that says manual internet connection setup
6) In internet connection type, select 3g
7) In 3G internet connection type, configure as follows:
username- xxx@revb.ttsl.in (xxx = 10 digit Photon no)
password- xxx
verify password- xxx
dialed number- #777
authentication- auto
reconnect mode - auto
* for further clarification about username check your photon dialer. Settings -> Profiles
8) click on save settings, the router will restart
9) Repeat steps 3 and 4, click on setup, go to wireless settings, manual settings
10) click on enable wireless, enter your desired network name
11) in 802.11 mode select B/G/N mixed
12) select channel (preferably 6 or 11), visibility status- visible.
13) security mode WPA- Personal
14) WPA mode- WPA2 only, cipher type TKIP
15) type your desired wifi pwd and click on save settings, the router will restart
Your router is ready to share network.
