Not bad for the price. Not bad at all. So I bought two of these.

To the point, I try to buy only smart routers.I'm currently using a Linksys EA6500 AC1750 (?14000) smart Dual band gigabit Router as a primary modem router for my ACT Fibernet connection. Then I had cat 6 cables run around the house. Other end needed a good gigabit router with a good enough range. I was using a Netgear R6220 AC1200 smart gigabit router (?3400) which was okay buy not all that good. With Netgear & D-Link (threw away all my D-Link products) , I had issues especially with unstable WIFI connection. And what really lacked was control on these other routers (all similarly priced) they just seemed restricted and dumbed down. Then I stumbled on to this Asus RT-AC58U. It had all the requirements I wanted, like WRT, print server & of course VPN.PROS:-Decent build quality-Very good performance (consistent data speeds)-MU-MIMO support (very stable wireless connection)-Good 2.4Ghz Range & 5GHz Coverage-Wave-2 802.11ac support-USB 3.0 with Print server, 4g dongle support & file server-VPN client & server support. (Darn important)CONS:-Only one USB port ( too bad that it's only one)-Changes in settings will take time and restart the router (super slow reboot)-No AiMesh feature (will buy the RT-AC86U soon)Only after Linksys's most beautiful interface, The Asus WRT GUI is also a delight to work with, and it's just like my ASUS prime b250 motherboard's UEFI seen on them, the layout, the feel, its top notch.Coming to VPN, it supports both VPN client & Server setup with PPTP, L2TP & OpenVPN Support. I personally have a CyberGhost Premium subscription & had no problem setting up an OpenVPN client in this router. After setup, activate and u can forget about it, as the VPN automatically reconnects after a restart. With VPN, the connection speeds usually drop a lot but luckily ain't my problem, I experienced stable & decent data speeds with pings less than <50ms which was truly impressive. I even tried with my other paid VPN subscriptions like Keepsolid's VPN Unlimited, ivacy Premium & Tiger VPN.Out of these, CyberGhost VPN was the only better performing client & it's very safe , doesn't keep logs, has malware protection & ad blocker feature and it's out of the 5 eyes, 9 eyes & 14 eyes countries list. For the asking price of ?4300, the ASUS RT-AC58U Wi-Fi Router offers a great deal. It's the perfect stepping stone between budget and powerhouse, just keep in mind this is a router only, and won't perform any miracle to a weaker Internet connection.Typical impressive ASUS performance, sleek visuals and pleasant UI. Stable connection & transfer speeds. One useful tip for you is to immediately update the firmware to Version 3.0.0.4.380.8228 that's released on April 2018. Will fix the problems what others mentioned in their negative feedbacks. Here's a list of fixes that are there in the new firmware,- Fixed information disclosure vulnerability.- Fixed CVE-2018-5721 Stack-base buffer overflow vulnerability- Fixed CVE-2018-8826 remote code code execution vulnerability.- Fixed CVE-2018-5999 HTTP authorization bypass and CVE-2018-6000. An independent security researcher has reported this vulnerability to Beyond Security’s SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure program- Fixed remote code execution vulnerability.- Fixed CVE-2017-14491: DNS - 2 byte heap based overflow- Fixed CVE-2017-14492: DHCP - heap based overflow- Fixed CVE-2017-14493: DHCP - stack based overflow- Fixed CVE-2017-14494: DHCP - info leak- Fixed CVE-2017-14495: DNS - OOM DoS- Fixed CVE-2017-14496: DNS - DoS Integer underflow- Fixed CVE-2017-13704: Bug collisionJune update-I've replaced the Linksys router with the better performing Asus 88U router. Upgraded my intranet wiring with CAT6E for a 1Gbps intranetSeptember 2018 update:My Asus 88U has been an amazing router, I've purchased a second AC58U router for my office network with no performance hiccups. Best thing is that I can manage all my Asus routers at once with the intuitive Asus app.

Pros:1. It's been 2 days since purchased.2. Lan Speed - Awesome3. Wifi Stability - Very good4. Range of 5Ghz & 2.4 better than other routers5. WiFi Speed - Good.6. Onboard and Setup - Easy7. Features - Yet to explore all. As of now configured connected my 1TB HDD as Media Server. Parental Control and VPN yet to try.8. UI - UEFI BIOS feelCONS:1. USB Storage - First time if you connect a HDD, it scans the entire drive slowly for media files and the same appear in devices slowly. It took few Hrs for less than 1TB Data.2. Applying Changes - Applying changes will reboot or take a min.3. Reboot and reconnect delayed - After couple of reboot.. hesitant to reboot.4. FTP Config - FTP Config is not easy as expected.5. Firmware Upgrade fails.6. App could've been better. These cons are liveable. I was Seeking Speed, Range and Stability. This was a perfect choice for my Act 250 Mbps.In Lan I get 250 MBPSIn WiFi 2.4 - 60 & 5 - 80 MBPS (After crossing Concrete walls and a Door)Seller: OnlineKing. Price is couple of hundreds more than others. But went for their review and never disappointed. Packing and time taken to deliver was impressive.

Android USB tethered internet Works, Lede(openwrt) doesn't as of 23-May-2018

History: I was using Tenda dh301 with BSNL adsl connect, bsnl is the only provider in my area and with the offer of bsnl which upgraded my 4mbps to 10mbps unlimited, that was a joy full experience. But word about the BSNL got out, more people started activating the the plan/connections in my area and my connection quality started to deteriorate badly even to a point of not able to use the internet. As BSNL being BSNL there response to my complaint was “it sucks but what to do this is how it is'” .I couldn't live with 2mbps constant disconnecting BSNL...I was looking for a modem which support JIO 4g USB tethering from mobile, it should have openvpn client and support for ddwrt or lede, after looking through I purchased gl-mt300a. But seeing buyer was asking 2000 more than actual value and also it took more than 2 week to reach me, I canceled the order and purchased this router,This is a great router, I have placed a jio sim on my old broken oneplus 2 and thetered internet to this modem, I recharge 3 gb day recharge for 6 times which gives 18gb per month(I use this much minimum per day) will soon ditch jio and take bsnl fiber waiting for my cousin to get the connection and test it before ordering, when going with bsnl I can use single USB 3 for network storage..---------------------------------------------------------------------------<--Pros-->---------------------------------------------------------------------------1) Charges phone while on USB tethering(expected).2) USB 3 port give me upto 41mbps up and 19mbps down, (tethered jio).3) In build VPN client most router says VPN it usually means VPN server, this one has client, load the configuration, load the CA file, type in username and password, activate the connection, the connection is maintain even after reboot.4) Mobile app which allowed you to get much information about connection performance, much more can be done using mobile app5) Beam forming and mimo is a added benefit6) Quad core processor and 128 ram is great for performance7) Lede support (don't like the ASUS fw - flash openWRT lede firmware) even messed up the install you can use Asus recovery tool to restore firmware.8) Stock UI and its options are clean and in par with more expensive router interface.9) Great FW support, 3 updates within 4 months.---------------------------------------------------------------------------<--Cons-->---------------------------------------------------------------------------1) Switching data from one sim to other, times decrease the speed to internet. Have to reboot the router to get full speed.2) Terrible 5ghz performance, to be fair I had Netgear r8000 its 5ghz was also terrible(find a optimal place for the router), 2ghz range and speed is same as previous router(good range)3) OpenVPN via USB tethering breaks some https site, site will not connect due to MTU settings..4) Bootup Takes close to a minute.Update(con)4) Openwrt(lede) Not working . You can flash it but wont detect wifi interface.. I Tried lot of lede firmware and also stock2lede firmware no one seems to get wifi to work (not detecting).. Didnt mess around much was fed up after a day of flashing and restoring stock etc. I belive there is a hardware change - One i havent tried is flashing way older firmware and flashing lede - I have a feeling that would work,,, If someone does get it to work pleae comment---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good speed, no connection drop, decent coverage and loaded with features

So far so good. Set up the router with BSNL FTTH in AP mode. Setting it up took some time as I had to go through some documents to configure it with BSNL. Though its not that tough for those who knows terms well. Getting max Mbps advertised by ISP. First time using 5ghz band in mobile and experience is good so far. Specially the Amazon fire tv stick can use 2x2 mimo. Now movies are streaming in HD as soon as the movie starts (previously in 300n it used to stream in sd for a minute). Gigabit LAN is helpful, connected my wd my cloud hdd, and getting good speed for read and write. And streaming lossless videos (1080p though not 4k) from it on fire tv stick without a problem. Range is good, covering 3bhk sufficiently, with some distant corner still not reaching, but its ok. So far no connection drop experinced yet. Did not use USB 3.0 port so cannot comment on that. Overall good product with USB 3.0 port, MU MIMO and Gigabit LAN, value for money in this price.

I bought this router as an upgrade to my old D-Link DIR-615 Wireless-N300 Router. I decided to upgrade to Asus RT-AC58U for a better streaming experience through my Chromecast and Fire Stick. With RT-AC58U, I am having a good browsing and streaming experience with this router. One of the most useful feature is the USB 3.0 slot. A USB pen drive attached to the router will create a network drive which works very well with the Fire Stick. I have side-loaded the Kodi app on my Fire Stick and this app works well to stream media on my television from the files stored in the USB device attached to the router. The media playback through the attached storage has been a seamless experience without any buffering lag.Wireless LAN speed for transferring files to the attached USB 3.0 device is 12 MB/s. It takes 2 minutes to copy a 1.4 GB file to the attached USB pen drive.Wireless internet speed review:I live in a 2 BHK home with the layout as shown below. There is a brick wall between each room.| Hall | Kitchen | Bedroom 1 | Bedroom 2 |I have subscribed to a 100 Mbps plan from YOU broadband. This router is placed in the kitchen. The speed test has been performed on my Thinkpad T420 laptop which has a network adapter with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 driver. Please see the attached image for the download speeds received in all the rooms. The upload speed in all the rooms is 21 Mbps. The speeds reported are as per the speedtest website for both 2.4 GHz (2G) and 5 GHz (5G) networks.Overall, this is an excellent home router for the price if you do heavy browsing and stream a lot of content from Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video.
