I just needed a backup storage to keep my important files so that in case of a hard disk crash I will not loose them. Sony was my first choice since I have used it and I was satisfied by the overall quality. But I could not find a sony HD in 500 GB capacity. 1 TB is too much for me. So I started looking for other brands. WD was under my consideration. I suddenly noticed this Toshiba 500 GB had disk at a reduced price of 3148. After reading lot of reviews, I ordered. I just received it today. I saw few reviews pointing out that it looks different from picture. But not in my case. It is exactly as it has been shown. I wish to point out how do I feel about it after few hours of its usage.*ProsSize. - I was amazed by its tiny size which could be easily carried in shirt pocket. Being light weight is also helpful in this. This is an important point. We could avoid carrying USB pen drives.Good item - I was expecting a old product manufactured in 2014 or 15 since 500 GB is a lower capacity and 1 TB size is largely sold. But to my surprise I found mine manufactured in Jan 2016 only. It is made in Philippines.Cons* Fragile - The product is handy but not sturdy or stronger. It could be easily broken or at least cracked if fallen. It certainly requires a good cover for protection. But I do not see this as a major drawback. It is our responsibility to take care of items that could be broken.* Speed - I am yet to fully test the read / write speeds of the HD. But in my little experience so far I felt that this is not definitely the fastest drive, it is either average or below average.* No software - It does not contain any utility software for protection of contents. It is just a blank hard disk. I should find out some third part tool for enabling password protection of my hard disk.Overall it met my expectations in which price and size were at the top. Others should carefully choose based on your requirements. If you get ir for around 3000 then it is worth buying, but for a price over 3500 you better go for 1 TB by spending 2 or 3 hundreds.

Even thoug the description does not mention it, the drive is indeed USB 3.0 and the indicator on it shines blue when it detects USB 3.0 interface.The benchmark result is as follows: Sequentia read: 121 MB/s, Sequentia write 113 MB/s | Random read: 189 IOPS, Random write: 300 IOPSThe storage inside the unit is a 2.5 inch 5400RPM Toshiba hard drive with 8MB buffer and running in SATA II mode, although I am pretty sure the drive inside itself supports SATA III. The one I received was brand new and totally unused.The product supports APM, NCQ, and fetching S.M.A.R.T. data through the USB interface, which is a big plus IMO. In my exerience, many cheap external drives do not support S.M.A.R.T.

Good product. But not played the movies with my sony bravia 40" Led TV model R452. In question answer it is answered that the movies can play with this hard disc by connecting usb port of any led/ Lcd tv .Soi am not satisfied with the answer. Product is compact in size and good. I am already having 1 Tb harddisc of Toshiba Canvio Basic. Works fine from last 1 Year.

USB 3.0 is the next big thing for storage devices,both pen drives and external hard drives with superfast transfer speeds depending on your system configuration and the hard drive speeds as well. I am able to transfer files as large as 5gb in a matter of 60secs through the USB 3.0 ports.Haven't tested it on the USB 2 ports so cant say much about transfer speeds there. Remember you have to have the latest USB 3.0 port on your Laptop or Desktop as well to get the full benefits of the hard drive and the superfast transfer speeds.USB 3.0 is usually coded in blue. Even if you don't own a computer with USB 3.0 ports,then also you can buy this device and it will serve you as a future investment as most computers will come with USB 3.0 ports from now on and USB 2 will soon become a thing of the past within a couple of years.So I would say just go for it. Flipkart delivered in 3 days.Awesome as ever.

Hello Friends, Did not buy this product through Flipkart. Bought this from a store 5-6 months back. Used it quite a lot, was working fine. Few days back it stopped functioning. Tried to connect to other laptops but did not work. Had a lot of important files, now worried whether I can retrieve the data or not. Seagate would be a better option as I will be buying that next and this time through Flipkart.

16 Sep 2013: The hard drive just stopped working some time back even though it was used only 7-8 times to copy data to-from PC. It was still in the bubble wrap that it came in so no question of any kind of physical impact that could have damaged it. Important data lost. Trying to use the warranty, hope something works out soon. * * * 29 Nov 2013: Two and a half months later I still don't have the details of a service center which can help with the warranty. Flipkart has also been unable to provide me the details. I asked them to remove the mention of a warranty because it is as good as fake, to no avail. Will reach out to Flipkart and Toshiba teams through Twitter as there isn't a satisfactory response on email from Flipkart.

I have used this hard disk for a year now. It's performance is very good. Reading/writing speeds are just as good as any other such device within the same price range( I am not including any stats, those numbers though might be necessary are not the deciding factor. ). The hard disk is small and handy ( fits inside the pocket easily ). Plus ( if any one cares ) it has got good looks too. :)

The best thing about this HDD is its speed... its average speed is 100 MB/s and this is a great performance. this speed is while copying files from PC to HDD. the speed is more when files copied from HDD to PC (around 110 MB/s). And also the size of HDD is small so its really very easy to carry anywhere. ALSO, u only get 465 GB usable space in HDD not 500 GB.. but its not a big deal. awesome TOSHIBA !
