A very competent Macro Lens

By Bernard Solomonon
I am an avid hobby photographer who loves to photograph flowers and insects. I procured a 70-300mm Nikon G lens in order to capture butterflies and though it is a cheap lens without VR (or IS in Canon terminology), the pictures come out pretty sharp as long as you are using the right balance between ISO, shutter speed and aperture. The need for a Macro lens arose because of the frustration I had shooting smaller insects as the 70-300 could magnify only so much. There is always a time when you are able to get closer to the subject (especially if is a lethargic insect or a stationary flower) but the focal length of a normal telephoto lens does not permit you to. I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Nikon 105 mm Micro and was ready to pay the premium as well. However, the earthquake in Japan put paid to my hopes. Later I came to know that the non VR version had been discontinued and the VR version was way beyond reach. The hunt therefore started for an off brand lens - Tamron, Sigma and Tokina. Tamron and Sigma were front runners, till I heard of the qualities of the Tokina and decided to take the plunge. I have not regretted the purchase one bit. The following are the characteristics of the lens that I have most enjoyed: 1. Build quality - The lens is well built and does not seem flimsy at all. 2. Image quality - Superb. At least in my opinion. I am not a pixel peeper and frankly could not care less. The images seem to be good for taking 6x8 prints at least and in opinion would be good for images four times bigger as well. Not tried any so far. 4. Bokkeh - Classic and smooth. 5. Working distance - Decent. Here are the things that are not so good: 1. Auto focus - Not very fast with a tendency to hunt 2. Image Stabilization - Not present However, I am not too perturbed. I shoot generally in M mode and prefer manual focusing. I am not so rich as to buy a VR lens and frankly prefer developing my skills using my hands first before I can get to the next level. This lens is a very good portrait lens as well. The large 2.8 aperture is good for shots in low light, though one might find the working distance for portraits longer than desirable. Will I recommend this lens? Definitely!!

Excellent macro in the price range.

By Suvendra Chandra Dasguptaon
Bought this for my D7000. Sharp, excellent colours and contrast. Can be used as a portrait lens also. f2.8 not achievable in full macro mode/close focussing (gives adequate DOF and bokeh at f3.6 and less). f2.8 can be got setting the focus switch to limit and when focusing at a distance in full macro. Lock aperture ring at f32 (use locking switch) before mounting. Align green mark beside aperture ring with mark on your lens mount when mounting. For D7000 aperture may be set using aperture ring (do not lock ring in this case). In that case choose proper settings in D7000 (f6, custom setting menu>controls>f6>aperture setting>aperture ring). Worth investing since this lens can be used in full frame bodies too. No VR. When shooting handheld use shutter speed >1/100. Focus tends to hunt occasionally. Build quality good and solid. Hood not really required since front element is recessed deep inside. Will definitely recommend!

Sharp!

By Arunabh Sharmaon
This is a very good looking solid lens. Extremely sharp and is at par with its Nikorr counterpart (The 105mm). It is a heavy lens and provides 1:1 magnification. However it doesn't have a AF motor. People with D90,D7000 and above wouldn't face this issue. But MF is often preferred for macro works..So if you're okay with MF, this is an optical treat!

Tokina AT-X M100 PRO D AF 100mm f/2.8 macro

By Dr Jagbir Singhon
I bought this lens about a month ago from Flipkart. I rate this lens as a complete lens for its price, total value for money. Trust me, you won't ever repent it after buying. I use it on a Nikon D90 body and results are amazing. I am a biologist, I work on moths, butterflies, amphibians and reptiles. I take all sorts of shots like, outdoor, staged shots (studio) and even record behaviour of the animals in wild. Here, comes its superb focus and crisp sharpness at play. I seriously recommend any one who is looking forward to buy a macro lens, especially from Flipkart. Flipkart's service is quick and products are genuine.

very sharp, but auto focus stopped working

By Srivathsa Raoon
I was very happy with the product for 3 months, then 1 days all of sudden autofocus stopped working. In india there is only one Tokina service center and it is in Delhi. Shipping became problem. Since MF-AF change is through clutch, it can go bad anytime. Had spend another 2.5k to get it fixed. Not sure how many more days it will work. It is a slow lens, But very sharp.. Perfect lens, if you are looking for low budget macro lens

Great macro lens.

By Utpal Sharmaon
Great macro lens. Only drawback I found and for which i rated it 4 star is the slow auto focus mode. Manual Focus mode is great. Excellent for portrait photography.

Great lens. A must buy

By Dr. DWIVIDENDRA KUMAR NIMon
I got this lens from flipkart @ 23500/- with a special 10% city bank discount. Lens is amazingly sharp @ widest aperture. Pros: 1. Solid built , super sturdy 2. Metal mount 3. Razor sharp at all f stops 4. Closest focus distance is better than any other lens in the class. even canon 100mm f2.8 USM(but it is a best buy if money doesn't matter for you) 5. Amazingly cheap for the quality 6. Comes with Lens hood (canon hood cost around 3000/-) in the sales package. Cons: 1. Barrel moves out while focusing. sometimes annoying specially if clicking bugs. 2. Slow and noisy autofocus Over all: While taking a macro shot manual focusing is must. so problems with autofocus dosen't matter. if you are using this lens for portraits this might be a problem, overall it is a great buy.

Cheap, quick macro and portrait lens

By Nikon converton
Getting down to it - it's a cheap, quick macro and portrait lens.Main characteristics of the lens (Nikon mount):- Optics: Very good (prone to chromatic aberration which can be removed during post processing)- Build: Solid body, metal mount, beautiful ergonomics- Uses: Portraits and macro (1:1)- Autofocus: Reasonably quick is well lit conditions. Manual is preferred for macroOne observation is that there was a spec on the inner lens element (this has to be a one off I guess). This causes a visible spot on photos at f32. On researching the only service center is in Delhi. Don't know about their track record, so not going to bother with it. I get rid of the spot during post processing.

Superb Lens

By VHon
After doing a lot of research (& reviews) bought this lens for my Nikon D750. One of the finest prime lens. Using it for product photography since December 2016. Nicely delivered by A9 Lenses - sealed brand new box with double packing.

excellent piece of glass!!

By Milind Dudwadkaron
Excellent optics, super sharp.. It makes chucky sound while adjusting focus, that's down side of it... Rest it works perfectly fine.. 4 Stars for product..Seller need to improve on packaging.. It was horrible..You are shipping lense!!! I would rate 2 stars for packaging and 4 stars on delivery time..

Doesnt feel like a low priced lens

By Abhishekon
Sharp, very sharp. Doesnt feel like a low priced lens. Very well constructed, metal mount. Focus switch is a bit clumsy. No vibration reduction but at this price point its optic quality make up for it.

Cheap and Best

By Amazon Customeron
Cheaper lenses generally don't have impressive optics, but lens is really a cheap and best version one can buy. Using it on my Nikon D750, and took some sharp shots.

Tokina AT-X M100 PRO D AF 100 mm f/2.8 Macro

By JBon
I was looking for Nikon 105mm then the reviews about Tokina made to to go for this . I have to tell am very happy with the performance for the lens though my tripod n ring flash is not that good. Pros: Pretty sturdy , well built, good contrast, very sharp. (dont woory about the VR or auto zoom which is of no use in macro, thats just a marketing factor ). Cons: Auto to manual switch makes a click which might alert the subject. And Flipkart delivered it in a day as said , great work Flipkart as ever.

Good Macro Lens but automode won't work with Nikon D5100

By Kausik Duttaon
I bought this Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens after comparing with the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens. Image quality is really good but its automode doesn't work with my Nikon D5100. So, am using in manual mode. But for macro and close-up photography, manual mode is recommended. Also, better to use a tripod. I bought it from Flipkart (WS Retail) on an offer and got it for Rs 22320/-
