NOT recommended for non technical people.

You need to know the technical details of the drive to be able to use it properly. The reason being the drive would work really slow and you wont like it unless you know a few things about how to use such a drive. It not only being a new design of SMR but also having multiple firmware for different uses of the drive as well. I got a newer version of the firmware designed for storage needs. The difference being the drive always works at an average speed. Which is at half the speeds of PMR drives. Unlike other firmware made for backup purposes which has burst speeds twice as high as the storage models but that speed drops off if you try to copy large amounts of data onto the drive. Using windows copy would scatter the file all over the drive, on a drive like this one, that would make the copy extremely slow. You have to use a copy program that reserves the entire file space at the start so it copies the entire file to the drive and stores it sequentially. This does not affect PMR drives but on an SMR drive this copy would slow it down to 10% of normal speeds. The different firmware also affects the speeds. IF you are only backing up the system every day, t only copies the changes to the system and on a backup drive it would seem to work like a normal drive. But then once the cache if full the speeds would drop drastically. On a storage drive since the cache is much smaller, the speeds would appear slower but you wont see this drastic drop in speeds. So to understand all this you need a technical background or at least some understanding on the way the different technologies work and also something that you cant find out before buying the drive, which firmware you are getting. You need to use a smart program to see the firmware version and although seagate sells the drive to different places with the firmware thats designed for the a particular workload, people try to buy from different sources to get the cheapest prices and then sell them online. So a drive sold to data center use will not work properly in the retail channel use. See all the complaints from people because of speeds or heat and such things. I did not experience such things because I got a drive from the retail channel and it was designed for storage use. The drive IS slower but nothing like what some people are experiencing. So unless you know what you are getting is a proper drive, ie seagate has specified it for retail channels and archival use etc, you will find weird things going on with the drive.ALL the drives are using the same hardware, only the drive software is different for different uses. So make sure you get a drive that is retail and contains the latest firmware. Very hard to upgrade firmware and such now. Its all a black box. Hence why I can not recommend this drive to the average user, at least with a technical background you would be able to somehow figure things out and maybe even flash to the proper firmware which the average user would find very difficult. But I like the drive for the large storage space and low power consumption.
