Things to know before you buy a screen
By Gautham Seranon
Hi,
First off, if you've come here after checking "LED" in order to narrow your options, well, it's very likely that you've been conned.
Popular belief is that LED screens are better than LCD screens. Before I disagree with that, I'd like to point out that the statement is incorrect. LED displays (what they market as LED displays) are a type of LCD display and LED is only used as the back-light.
So, practically all of the flat screen TVs/monitors use LCD with either CCFL or LED to illuminate the pixels, so to speak.
LED consumes less power than CCFL. As for quality, while LED back-lit screens are definitely better than their counterparts, it's important that you know about display panels, which play a bigger role than backlighting, when it comes to quality.
While back-lights are used to illuminate the picture, display panels are where the picture is created. The most widely used display panels are TN display panels, VA display panels and IPS display panels.
TN display panels are the cheapest in the market and offer relatively narrow viewing angles. VA are somewhere between TN and IPS panels. IPS panels are expensive and offer the widest viewing angels (practically from corner to corner).
So, as for this particular monitor, it's definitely a killer in terms of looks but surely a tad expensive as it uses a TN display panel.
If you intend to watch movies with family/friends, then I'd look for a monitor with IPS display panel.
However, if your purpose is purely gaming, you could consider this for its response time of 2 ms, which is probly the best and viewing angles don't really matter.
To sum it up, go for an LCD monitor with LED back-lighting (preferably RGB-LED as opposed to the commonly used W-LED), fast response time (

I just love this monitor and it doubles up as an HD TV too, all you have to do is connect your set-top-box via HDMI cable.
If you are a stickler for color accuracy it may not be the best screen out there, Blues appear more purple than blue and this is post calibration.
But Movies in HD are out of this world!

I would just love to buy this monitor. Its a great one from Samsung, 2ms refresh rate, 27" huge screen, wonderful design, but not available in Bangalore. I wish it was available in Bangalore and I would be the first one to buy.
