The Beast !!!!

By JOHN WILSONon
It is a drive having lightening speed Performance wise its fast and the machine boot up in 5 odd seconds, compared to the previous 10 to 15 seconds,, Apps etc all open in a jiffy. so a big marked improvement over regular 5400rpm drives. Sequential Read: Upto 540 MB/sec, Sequential Write: Upto 520 MB/sec, Cache Memory:- 512 mb On price Even though it is priced very high compared with performance ,storage, build quality it is worth(if u want speed over 7200 rpm old hard drive)

2 second boot. Blazing Fast

[Update: Nov 2015] Installed Samsung Magician v4.9, update firmware if prompted and reboot. I have also uploaded screenshots for reference.Data written to SSD so far as of today: 4.27 TBCurrent Firmware: EXT0DB6QLatest Benchmarks:Seq Read: 548MB/sSeq Write: 531MB/sRandom Read IOPS: 95167Random Write IOPS: 63202As you can see, Sequential Read and Random Write IOPS increased but small decrease in Seq Write of 2MB/s and Random Read IOPS of 609.Verdict: Boots fast. Happy with the SSD :)====Config:i7-4790K, Asus Maximus Ranger, 8gb Gskill 1600Mhz CL9 RAM, Corsair H90, Seasonic X-650, Samsung 840 120gb Evo, 1TB Black, Win 8.1 x64 Pro-Boot time is 2 seconds. Very fast.-Easy installation.-Trim Enabled SSD.-SSD was installed with latest firmware which fixes the slow deteriorating read/write bug.Initial Benchmarks:Seq Read: 538MB/sSeq Write: 533MB/sRandom Read IOPS: 95776Random Write IOPS: 57158Hope this helps.

Excellent and very high speed even without installing additional given softwares

I bought this SSD after reading several reviews from internet. All hardware and firmware is manufactured by Samsung unlike other branded SSDs in which most of the parts are sourced from different vendors (in China and Taiwan) which reduces reliability. Other brands have higher failure rates and Samsung has lowest (almost NIL) and thus I selected to go with Samsung. This particular 840 EVO is faster and better than previous 840 series and also not as expensive as 840 Pro. I am using Windows XP SP2 and I had no problems in detecting the disk and using it. I am not using any additional softwares provided by Samsung like "Samsung Magician" software and RAPID software which further claims to improve the speed. The disk is fine without that. In fact I don't want to make my disk dependent on these softwares. I am having SATA 2 (not SATA 3) motherboard and the disk is fine and running with very high speed even with SATA 2 (3 Gb/s). So I doubt if SATA 3 (6 Gb/s) would provide any added advantage. The booting time of Windows XP was improved from previous 1 minute 30 seconds (with HDD) to 28 seconds (with SSD). So this is a huge improvement. Also all programs like MS-Office, Firefox etc. open under 1 second. Previous used to take 5-6 seconds to open. Random read/write speed are excellent as compared to HDD. Benchmarking tool shows 240 MB/S and 220 MB/S as Read/Write rates which is very good. I don't even have AHCI on my motherboard but still the disk is extremely fast. So purchase it even if your motherboard is 5-6 years old and just supporting SATA 2. It doesn't come with any SSD adapter for installing in desktop but it can be safely placed anywhere in cabinet with just one screw as it is very light. It doesn't get hot even after hours of usage. So overall a must have upgrade for old (or even new) computer.

An upgrade which really makes its presence felt.

I was sceptical about spending a huge amount for such a low storage and frankly I thought that to launch an application faster or to boot the OS a few seconds earlier is not going to matter a lot in real life. But I was WRONG. Booting your PC and launching the games, applications faster are the only things which are going to matter in day to day life for an average user. The satisfaction I get when my browser, adobe photoshop and other applications launch in a blink of an eye is immense. I upgraded from a dual core (Athlon 4000+ to phenom quad core to I5 4440, RAM from 2 GB DDR2 to 8 GB DDR3, onboard graphics to GTX 970) but never felt any noticeable difference in day to day performance. Upgrading your processor, RAM ( because these days everyone has enough) is not going to make an iota of difference in real world performance unless you are into heavy image or video editing, games etc, I am also a digital artist and I am fine with multiple layers on a dual core powered laptop, but this beauty will make its presence felt. In my opinion, SSD is the only upgrade which actually matters in every scenario. Go for it.

Gives good speeds but not good in the long run.

I would suggest people to NOT BUY THIS SSD.Samsung has implemented TLC nand which degrades read speeds after few days unless it is re-written with fresh data. New firmware does not fully resolve the issue.850 EVO or Pro recommended over this.Better would be Sandisk Extreme Pro or Crucial MX200, both of which have superior MLC nand.

Best upgrade for your Macbook Pro to a much a faster machine.

I ordered this SSD for my Macbook Pro 13". Installation was super easy. Anybody can follow tutorials on youtube and install by own. Just use appropriate screw driver to open the back panel of your MBP. Once installed the drive, I installed the OS fresh. And that the point where it truly proved it worthiness. The whole installation took less time compared to earlier. Now within 5 seconds, the system boots up. And you can open multiple heavy application at once and they all will open instantly.Since I own an iMac and use the MBP for standby, going for PRO version was not my choice. But I guess even this version is well suited since you wont feel much difference after using it for some time.
