I wanted a beginner telescope for my son, but I live in a cramped apartment so portability was very important. Did months of reading up before narrowing down on this equipment. There are 2 types of budding astronomers. The first type understands the telescope mechanisms to the limit and fine tunes it for hours before spending 5 minutes watching the skies. The 2nd type does not fiddle too much with the equipment but wants to spend a couple hours ina month staring at the sky, I fall into the 2nd type, simple setup and more time watching the skies. Again dont expect to see NASA like pictures, but I was able to catch a few craters, and a little bit of the darker side of the moon. Not gazed into galaxies, as the skies have been overcast since the day I bought it. But since I live in a city I expect to go out of town once in a while and spend some time gazing at the skies, and this scope is fantastically portable. Cons: The tripod is very light and you'll have to struggle to hold it steadin heavy winds or even using higher magnifications. Nevertheless a joy to own, if your budget is around the 10k limit, if you intend to take it out of town to get a view of the real night skies and dont want to spend hours setting it up. With these constraints the view offered is great. I fully encourage it for newbie astronomers, and then you can continue to dream on of the computerized scope that can stare into deep space without moving a thumb and maybe serve coffee too.

Excellent beginner's scope

I started off with Astronomy a couple of months back, and this scope is by far the best you can get under 10k. If you're looking for something more powerful (which still fits the category of beginner scopes), go for the Astromaster 130eq (the non-motorized version), which retails for about 14-15k. The scope itself is brilliant. There's a high degree of clarity, and I would recommend it to just about anybody. And I love how compact it is and easy to carry around. The 10mm eyepiece is useful only when used for looking at the moon. Deep space objects/constellations look the same under it. You'll hear people mentioning that one should buy a moon filter to be used along with this scope, but I didn't think it was really that necessary. Also, a 2x barlow from Celestron might be a good addition - especially for moon gazing, but definitely not a 3x barlow. A 2x barlow used with the 20mm eyepiece would still let you retain that wide field of view, while giving you the same magnification as the 10mm eyepiece, while the 10mm eyepiece would be amplified from 40x to 80x. With the existing tripod, anything over 80x would probably just be really hard to focus on. The tripod however, IS average. When you want to tighten/lock the telescope onto a certain object, you'd have to lower the scope a bit before tightening/locking it - because it tends to move up just a little bit. Other owners of this scope would know what I'm talking about. But other than that, there really isn't anything to complain about. The same could be said for the travelscope. I really don't use it. You'd need a t-ring (specific to the DSLR camera you have) and a t-ring adapter for taking photos with DSLR cameras, but taking long exposure photos would probably be out of the question because it's impossible to track moving objects with this scope's tripod. Stellarium is an excellent piece of software that one could use in place of the software that Celestron provides, on a pc/laptop. Skeye (for Android) and Google Sky are other decent alternatives as well. While Skeye has more detail, it doesn't have this one feature that Google Sky does, where you could find out what's visible to you in the night sky just by pointing your phone at it. Using both apps together however, is the best thing to do in my opinion.

Good Telescope !!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best telescope.... Perfect for beginners........... I didn't expect this much from it... It's good. Go for it, if you are a beginner. Best product from Celestron. The eye pieces are good.. Only thing bad about the telescope was the mount and the finder. The mount is flimsy. But, the scope is great. One of the finest product from Celestron at this price tag.

Very good beginner scope

The telescope is for beginners and is reasonably priced. For a beginner scope the two most important things are the ease of setup and the ease of use, this one is perfect in both. And I am impressed with the portability of the scope. The backpack provided can comfortably fit all the components and is very small in size to carry around. Now don't take it lightly this is a really powerful scope. I have seen the craters in moon, rings of Saturn, the all red Mars and the lines of Jupiter with this scope. All the targets are easy to find and view. For lunar observations its better to view when the moon is half, it will look much sharper and with details than a full moon. For observing the other planets choose a night with clear sky, high visibility, no light pollution (preferably a no moon day and away from cities) then you can view all the details of the planets. Overall its a wonderful telescope for your new found hobby of celestial observation. This is also good for terrestrial observation.

I am very much satisfied with the product and the experience with it was amazing. Iam just a beginner so i can't discuss most of the issues related to it.More over the software "Sky Line X" that come with it very useful to locate a no.of planets and constellations. It was delivered with in 3 days.Very much useful for those who want to start astronomical viewing. The problem is that it doesn't come with azmith locking tripod.A very good deal.I strictly recommend it.
