ASUS Zenfone 4: Best budget phone in the market!

By Sarthak Singhon
I'm stepping down after using a Galaxy Note 3 (which I lost, hence this phone in the interim),but I will to try to be as objective about the Zenfone 4 as possible. 1. Unboxing: The phone came in a stylish little box which slides out instead of flipping open. Contents include the handset, battery, 2-pin USB wall adapter and a data-cum-charging cable. Earphones have been omitted as an obvious cost cutting measure. The device has a sturdy look to it,though very plain. The concentric circle design at the bottom saves some grace though (reminded me fondly of my old Moto Razr V3i). Opening the cover was difficult (requires a firm pull) but it never felt like it would crack. The battery slid in smoothly. Inserting the micro-sim and "clicking" it inside was difficult (may require fingernails or a pin). The cover snaps back securely with several loud clicks. Asus has done a good job with the build quality overall. Although, the capacitive keys have haptic feedback but not backlight...cost cutting becomes too obvious there. Also, the Power/Lock key and the volume rocker have a tacky 'click-click' noise to them. 2. Display: The Zenfone 4 has a 4" display with a 480x800 pixel resolution. The colours are not AMOLED-punchy but not totally washed out either. It offers decent sharpness,colour-rendering and size for the price. The 'Splendid' module gives the user some control over the display properties. The display is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Still,it's a fingerprint magnet and becomes quiet smudgy after a while. Matt-finish screen guard is not a solution either as it will ruin the sharpness further. Sunlight legibility isn't great. Brightness indoors is more than enough. Its missing the ambient-light sensor so you'll have to adjust it manually. 3. Battery: The Zenfone 4 comes with a 1600 mAh battery. It isn't exactly a marathon runner. With medium usage,it should probably last you 15-18 hours (which is enough, just charge it every night). Heavy users (gaming,3G,movies) will have to look for a charging point every 5-6 hours. 4. UI: The Zenfone 4 come with Android 4.3 skinned with the ASUS ZenUI. Its a simple interface and very functional. Frankly, slightly more intuitive than Touchwiz on my old Note 3. (Disclaimer: I don't really like changes very much so I've switched to Nova Launcher, which I was using on the Note 3 too.) 5. Performance: The Zenfone 4 comes with a 1.2 GHz Dual Core Intel Atom Z2520 Processor with Hyper Threading tech, 1 GB Ram and PowerVR SGX 544MP2 graphics : AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN at this price. I don't know the exact benchmarks but I can give you a user experience. It's a decent performer and till now, I've had no lags, no song track skips, and no freezes or unintentional restarts. It runs Clash of Clans and Asphalt 8: Airborne smoothly, without heating up. Enough said! 6. Phone/Messaging: The dialer and 'Contacts' interface is skinned with ZenUI but very similar to stock android. Its simple and clean with beautiful, smooth graphics. The signal and call clarity are upto the mark. I don't use the messaging app or the stock keyboard (thank you,Whatsapp and SwiftKey) so no comment. 7. Media: The phone comes with a decent music player (with 'folders' display). The sound is loud and crisp (with average bass) on the earphones but a big let down on the phone external speaker. I mean, you can BARELY hear it. It also has FM Radio,to cater to the masses and to those who're bored of their massive music library. Videos, again I never use the built-in player (thank you,MX Player) so can't comment on that. The gallery is simple, smooth and well designed though. 8. Camera: The Zenfone 4 has a 5 MP Autofocus camera (Autofocus, being the keyword here). The pictures come out okay in daylight but colour reproduction is average (very toned-down saturation). There's no flash so low-light photos are...I don't mean to sound crude,but...useless. Pixelmaster is in my opinion,a gimmick. Video recording at 1080p,30 fps is a nice touch and puts it far ahead of its price-point competitors. Impressive! 9. Connectivity: The latest Wifi 802.11 b/g/n and 3G HSPA+ are excellent. Chrome works superbly with it. Bluetooth 4.0 is also good. Connected to my Samsung laptop and JBL Charge bluetooth speaker seamlessly. 10. Conclusion: Its a huge step down for me from the Galaxy Note 3 to the Zenfone 4 (till I buy the iPhone 6) but not that big a jolt. Its a more than decent phone for the price with plenty of features to keep you satisfied for a couple of months,or even years! Ratings: 1. Unboxing & Hardware: 4/5 2. Display: 3.5/5 3. Battery: 3/5 4. UI: 4/5 5. Performance: 4.5/5 6. Phone/Messaging: 4/5 7. Media: 3.5/5 8. Camera: Still - 3.5/5 ; Video - 4/5 9. Connectivity: 4.5/5 *Flipkart: 5/5! The shopping experience, billing, payment, tracking and delivery... Excellent as always! Keep up the good work. Note to Flipkart: FM Radio is present. Please correct it in your specs.

Fixed battery Issue ....

hey guyz . I bought this phone before 1 month. the phone is working perfect . 1. Back Camera is very good. however flash is missing. Front is ok not too great. the best thing about the camera is auto focus. Camera is heavily customised. front camera also has face detection sensor which generally not fount in this price segment. 2.display is good. however viewing angles are too great but satisfactory. display is bright enough . you cant feel any problem even in sunlight. 3.sim card are working good, network strenght is also good.but one thing that i felt is bad we can not connect manually to 3G network . Hope ASUS will do something in KItkat update. Performance of the cpu is quite impressive. Antutu benchmark is over 18000 which is realy surprising in this range. heads off to Intel. 4.speaker Sound is very clear however too low . we can not hear anything in noisy environment . sound in headphone is very impressive . however u cant get any of the earphone within the box . you have to sort out some extra bucks for this. 5.The design of the phone is very good. good thing is capactive buttons are out of screen but bad thing is they are not BACKLED.back cover is good ,it has rubberised coating . feels very good in hand .power button and volume rockers are made of cheap plastic with metal finishing. 6.Gorrila glass looks good . it would get any of scratches hardly. 7.lets talk about software . phone is operating on Android 4.3 jellybean OS .User interface is heavily customised by Asus by ZEN UI which is running makkhan malai on this phone .ZEN UI looks quite different .i thing Asus has done hard work on getting what people want. 8. Call quality is pretty awesome and crystal clear. 9. Battery : one of the major problem with the phone is its battery. battery is of 1600 mAH which is not too bad . normally phone works for 4 to 5 hour in continuous usage of wifi and web browsing. but guyz today em gonna tell you how u can increase the battery life . first location services and auto syncing should be off. second smart saving function should be on in ultra saving mode . third u cant find in the phone . but i m telling how you do find in the phone . Go to setting>About>software information >build number. click on build number 5 times continously . now it will tell you that now you are a Developer. now open setting again and u will find the option of "developer option" at bottom side . open it and find "set background process" at bottom side ,open and "set it two or one." now done . it will increase your battery life from 4 hours to 8 hours. battery would not drain automatically even in stand by mode . Thank you all. gud luck.

After nearly 4 months of use.....previous title:Don't worry Radio is there....and much more to expect or not to expect.

By Omparkash Singhon
After nearly 4 months of use: ---------------------------- This is gonna hurt. The phone used to crash many times.but there were many updates from Asus for that too to resolve those crashes.may be they knew this. And when new Android OS update came on air, was happy thinking of what new features it will give me, but then phone refused to update and got stuck.had to reset from recovery menu and then again when I checked for updates, it says no new updates.looks like Asus removed new OS upgrade for the moment from its servers or may be its another bug. And now the phone keeps on restarting when I do the following: Place the phone on a metal surface and then start play store and try to just access app list. Boom!! It restarts everytime on doing this. also when screen is turned off, it gets shutdown automatically after sometime without my knowledge.so someone may be trying to call me, but its off.so no disturbance :-) Finally I will give it 5 stars on a negative scale if available. Will update more once I take it to their service centre for repair. Previous review: ---------------- Yes i said it right. The phone does have a radio. I don't know why the spec says no radio. So after clearing this doubt, i directly come to the pros and cons: Pros: 1. Budget Price of 6000 2. Dual Sim 3. Front and Rear Camera 4. Radio 5. Resolution is 800x480, but i didn't find any pixelation. So don't worry it's a good display resolution. 6. 4" screen its enough good size. 7. 1 GB RAM 8. LED light in front for charging status Cons: 1. Both Sims can't work on 3G. One Sim has to be operated on 2G if you want other Sim to use 3G. 2. No option to have network as "Automatic" "3G only". Only "2G only" option is there to select, if not selected then it takes default setting as automatic because i can see the network switching sometimes between Edge and H+. 3. Speakers are too low on sound in some applications and while ringing. 4. Will not charge most of the times from Laptop USB port. Keeps on saying "Insufficient current". 5. No earphones provided in the box. 6. Very glossy display. Its definitely a mirror. Though not very irritating. 7. Selecting hide application option in application menu removes icon from home screen also. 8. "BACK, HOME, RECENT APPS" buttons at the bottom doesn't have a back-light. 9. Volume and power button are easily exposed and prone to damage when back cover is opened I hope this review helps.

perfect as a budget phone!

By Harryon
i preordered it for white color and got in just two days on 3rd sept. even after buying there was preorder option and now its out of order. phone is quite nice if you don't have high expectation like on redmi 1s. the zen ui is superb and after buying this phone i came to know that asus zenfone design got reddot award of 2014 for best design. and i must say the design is really worth for winning award. it is way better than zenfone 4 and comes nearer to zenfone 5. pros of this phone for such a price: flash, superb gaming support(supports all the heavy games like riptide gp2,asphalt 8 with full graphics rendering) camera is better than moto g and it has so many amazing options on capturing photos.customized UI called zen UI makes the phone look very much like a premium phones costing probably around 20000 and more.,touch response is very fluid and smooth and it feels great on fingers like a feather touch, back cover is nice and gives a great look, other specialty is as given in the specification. cons: battery is not great which seems as same as in zenfone 4 & 5.but not really bad for a moderate user .doesnt have glove touch as zenfone 5 has. it heats up quite a bit if u continue to play games for more than 10min which most phone does.it doesnt support otg cable as it was in zenfone 4 out of the box until asus provided the ota update.hope they will provide otg support update soon after many user will buy this phone the phone have less cons than pros. it is a great device for a student as it has so many features which are quite helpful for a student. one more cons is that it doesnt provide headset out of the box .and screen guard and case cover is not out yet and looks like we have wait sometime for the accessories. Edited: got the update zenfone firmware Version WW V4.2.3 and now it supports otg cable.can play videos and movies directly from pendrive without copying in the phone memory or sdcard.
