A Gaming Beast : Not a perfect one
By Mainak Pon
October, 2018 Review -
=================
Only Laptop and Charger will be provided. Nothing else. The logo will not glow, keyboard has only red backlight, no RGB backlight.
1. Display
Display is not 120 Hz, it is 60 Hz only. But quality is not bad. Colour reproduction, brightness, viewing angle - all meet expectations. HDMI Port is directly connected to Nvidia Graphics card unlike many budget laptops which has HDMI connection through Intel Graphics Card. Hence, if you connect any external monitor via HDMI port, you will unlock additional settings in Nvidia Control Panel. Hopefully, if you connect external G Sync Monitor with this laptop, G Sync will be activated.
Update after 2 months of usage (October, 2018) -
Monitor is quite vibrant. Best thing is, if you hook up proper external display with GTX 1060, it can display all the way to 1920x1080, 120 Hz, 4k - 60 Hz.
2. Processor
Processor is beast. But comes at a price. Runs very hot under load. Max temp I have seen 97. Undervolting is recommended. It will bring temperature down by at least 7 9 degrees. Use Throttlestop and enable Speedshift, disable Turbo mode and Speed step. These things should be provided in the BIOS itself, but the BIOS is not updated it seems. Once you enable SpeedShift and disable SpeedStep, temperature will decrease drastically.
Update after 2 months of usage -
Undervolting is must. Except PS3 games, maximum temperature hovers around 70-75. If very high CPU and GPU usage occurs, then only it touches 90.
3. Graphics Card
GFX card is GTX 1060 6 GB card, not Max Q version. Works very well with all the recent titles. Throw any games at ultra settings, will run the game with 60+ FPS. Only exception was MAFIA III, but that is due to the poor optimization. GTX 1060 laptop is VR Ready. Graphics card undervolting via MSI Afterburner is recommended.
Update after 2 months of usage -
Would recommend to undervolt using MSI afterburner. This beast can be overclocked too, from MSI Gaming Centre, but wont recommend, as it already runs hot.
4. RAM
Ram frequency is 2667 MHz, best in class. 2x8 GB ram sticks have been used.
5. Battery
Battery life is disappointing. Max 1.5 HRs backup. Use Dragon Centre to optimize your battery. When you are gaming, use Turbo mode. When you want to watch movies and do some light tasks, use Eco mode.
Update after 2 months of usage -
Maximum battery life I got after using ECO mode, nominal Chrome usage and youtube usage, is 3 to 3.5 hrs. Okayish as it is a gaming laptop.
6. Fan
There is a provision of increasing fan speed which makes the whole setup noisy, but works well. Reduces temperature by 4 5 degree.
7. Sound
Sound is not good. In game sounds are okayish. Could have improved the speaker quality. Nahimic software is nothing but a gimmick. Even external speaker sound is very low from the laptop. I have a Logitech X50 speaker. When connected with my previous laptop, it gives very loud sound, but with MSI, the sound is so low!! Sound is really disappointing.
Update after 2 months of usage -
Can be a bit louder if you crank up almost all settings of the Nahimic Panel, especially the Treble part. But don't push it to the maximum as it might damage the speakers. Remember to choose 48 KHz, 24 bit sound in Realtek Audio Control Panel.
8. Software
Software are not updated at all. Need extensive download. Make sure you have good WiFi connection. After installing Windows OS, and other few prerequisite, you will get 70 GB free out of 128 GB SSD.
Excellent
