Good quality product

Hello reader, [3.8 STARS to be fair.] I had bought this laptop in December, 2017 and after using it for 5 months, writing this review hoping it would help you make a decision. The laptop has a nice grey finish to begin with. Looks pretty premium. The 15.6 inch Full HD screen is a treat to the eyes. It's got a backlit keyboard with dedicated number pad. The first couple of days I spent updating everything I could, from apps to Windows 10 itself. In just under a month, faced BOOT FAILURE twice. Lenovo support agents weren't of any help to be honest. They told me LENOVO handles only the hardware issues and for software related issues, customers need to contact Microsoft, which is completely FALSE. These manufacturers get a discount from Microsoft to deal with the software related issues as well so that the customers don't swing between vendors and Microsoft. Got resolved by contacting Microsoft online forum. Probably had to do with Microsoft more than Lenovo. Nonetheless, Lenovo customer service is a headache. Never have I faced boot failure since. I'll update if it happens again. The laptop's got a decent enough webcam, I don't use it and therefore doesn't really matter for me. But, if you're into video chatting and stuff, it's pretty okay. Battery backup isn't something to be proud of. Just your average laptop in this regard with 3-4 hours maximum with 30-40 percent brightness and full charge at a time with normal use. Not even more than an hour while gaming. You'd expect much better after paying nearly 60k for it. Then again, currently most of the laptops in this price range or lower face this issue which is completely unacceptable. I use it while PLUGGED IN all the time so the laptop uses power from the mains rather than the inbuilt battery itself. As far as gaming is concerned, I have played Counter Strike : Global Offensive and Grid 2 and there were no noticeable lags in CS : GO, just a random lag here and there but it was very smooth 98% of the time. Couldn't play Grid 2 at all because of so many LAGS all the time which make you quit the game and never go back again. Heats way too much while playing games since the summer has started even if you're sitting right under the fan. Didn't heat that much during winter. Air conditioned room would definitely help, of course. Can't play for more than 10 minutes straight at a time because it gets so TERRIBLY HOT that you can't even touch it, mostly at the top left of the keyboard. Need to minimize the game, use a HANDHELD FAN to reduce the heat as soon as possible and get back to playing again. Won't recommend if you're going to buy this laptop for gaming purpose and use it in a non-AC room during SUMMER. Finally, this device has got Intel Core i5, 7th generation, which is more or less outdated now. DON'T BUY any laptop with this configuration anymore since 8th generation Core i5 is available around this price range. Add a couple thousand Rupees if it gets you the latest version, so that it at least lasts for 3-5 years. Just a tip :- Don't let your laptop's battery go down below 20% and don't charge it more than 95%. Make sure you use an app that won't allow rhe battery charge past a certain level, say 80-85%. Use the device while plugged in as much as possible. This will increase the battery life. Hope it helps. Happy buying. Cheers!

Fabulous!

Build quality: What the product description doesn't say is that the laptop has an aluminum finish body with chamfered edges. Overall it feels like a sturdy laptop with great finish. Ergonomics: The laptop is a standard 15.6in and comes with a wide footprint. However, it is to be noted that it is quite compact for its size. It is thin and feels lighter than the 2.2kg mentioned in the product description sheet. The TouchPad also has a metallic feel to it. Specifications: The laptop performs as it is supposed to. Do note that 940mx is a budget gpu and you shouldn't expect anything surprising, especially when it comes to gaming. Heating: With normal multimedia/productivity suites, the laptop stays cool. In an air conditioner environment, the laptop is rather cold to touch due to the metallic finish. I haven't seen the temperature rise after 8-10 hours of continuous use, it can at best be termed warm after such usage. The heat sinks are located on the bottom parts and on the side of the screen hinge therefore there is no side facing exhaust like the older laptops. Thermal performance during gaming is yet to be tested. Screen: Matt finish anti glare screen is a blessing and saves the eye. 1080p will strain the eye, the size settings are set to 125% which feels good. The problem can however be with sunlight visibility if you are using the laptop under the sky on a bright sunny day, which should be a rarity. The screen brightness at its maximum feels a tad lower than what it should be. Keypad: The keypad isn't detachable, but Back-lit. The light leaks from under the keys and is a big let down in darkness. Battery: With normal productivity suites, 8 hours is likely, with videos, 4 hours is likely and under high stress situations 2.5 hours will likely be the norm. However, the battery is integrated and not user replaceable. I've have a brilliant run with Lenovo batteries till date. All my previous Lenovo laptops have their batteries working with 3+ hours of backup even after 4-5 years of usage. Speakers: The laptop is provided with speakers by Harmon. Sounds good and the clarity is something I'll vouch for. Do note that the speakers are located on the front bottom and tend to get muffled on uneven surfaces such as a bed/mattress. The volume is loud enough for a laptop, look at portable speakers for a party of more than 3. Overall, I'm satisfied with the laptop and it is priced decently for its premium look and feel.

Been using this model for 3 months now. A brief review-- GOOD THINGS FIRST: Build quality is very good and the keyboard setup feels nice to type. Good sound quality. Better battery backup. It gives about 5-6 hours backup during normal use with 40-50% brightness. But its significantly low during gaming, hardly last for an hour. No heating issues during normal use. (Heats a lot during gaming even if you play for 10 minutes). Screen quality is awesome with the full HD resolution. Fingerprint sensor is super responsive and quick. THE WORST The worst part of this laptop is its hdd. The moment your machine starts , the hdd starts making clicking/rattling noise all the while and if you are working at night, you will be really irritated. Contacted lenovo service many times but there is no solution to this problem. This problem has been reported by numerous numbers of ideapad 520 customers all across the globe. The only solution I found while reading the lenovo forum is to replace the hdd with any other brand as reported by one of the suffered customers. But in India, this so called premium support from Lenovo doesn't even care about your problem. The only solution they provide is "Sir, this a limitation of this system and some noise will be there". I am not sure whether all the ideapad 520's are making this noise but would surely recommend you not to buy.
