Following are a list of questions you should spend some time thinking before you even start researching for laptops.

  • Is it going to be your primary machine?
  • How often you plan to be mobile with it?
  • How often will it run on battery
  • How big do you want it to be so you can use it comfortably?

After some dedicated time to the above question, you can read further and take a look at the different types of laptops and specification and you will realize that having thought over some aspects already it will be easier for you to make a decision.

Major laptop types

Soon you will realize that all laptops are not created equal. Most of them are designed to fill a specific niche and so it’s important that you understand your suit before you indulge in the specifications. Here are some of the most common types.

Ultrabooks

Thin and light, they are perfect to carry around especially for someone who is constantly on the go and needs a computer but does not want to sacrifice power at the same time. Ultrabooks are equipped with low-power Intel Core processors, solid-state drivers and unibody chassis. However, they don’t provide many ports and most of them don’t have optical drives which attributes to the thin body which is less than 0.8 inches in thickness. The size does not matter and Ultrabooks are powerful all thanks to their fast processors, extra RAM, better storage and high screen resolution of 1080p.

Netbooks

Like Ultrabooks, Netbooks are designed for extreme portability, lightweight profile and long battery life. While it was predicted that netbooks will soon be extinct due to the introduction of tablets in the market they seem to be chugging along. Netbooks are highly affordable at about half the price of Ultrabooks but they also have half its functionality. Best suitable for you, if you are constantly on the move but need a laptop for web browsing, word processing and other basic uses.

Business laptops

Business laptops demand certain standards in design, durable for travel, interiors that will handle any software and not to forget a wide variety of ports for presentations as well as data transfers. Most of the business laptops come with added security features like fingerprint scanner.

Gaming laptops

Gaming laptops are more about capability rather than mobility. They are usually 17 inch screen with mind blowing specifications and awesome display. They often sport a thick, heavy and a bit beasty appearance. A true example of “beauty lies within”, they possess high-speed quad-core processors aided with large RAM for faster operations. With mind blowing graphics card, a high end gaming laptop has stunning smooth display with brilliant 1080p and lightning fast solid-state drivers. As these have highly advanced visual capabilities, gaming computers are perfect for advanced image editing.

CPUs/Processors

A processor is like the brain of the computer, everything you wish to do with your computer from a simple task of moving your cursor across the screen it goes the processor. There are basically two most common processors in the market; AMD and Intel. Though both of them do the same job and do it well, which one you chose is simply a personal choice.

AMD

AMD processors come in a series A4, A6, A8 and A10 which are next gen processors and claim to double the performance, the cost of the laptop increases with the increase in the series. You can also run across the E-series called the E1 and E2.

Intel

These are the most commonly found processors and come in a series of Core i3, Core i5, Core i7. Core i3 is found in mid-range laptops while i7 is found in more expensive machines with high performance.

Hard drives and storage

Your laptop will either have a spinning platter hard drive (HDD) or a solid state hard drive (SSD).

HDD

HDD is found in large variety of laptops; they are large and inexpensive but also add weight and heat to your laptop along with moving parts. Look for a 320 GB hard drive even in the budget system.

SSD

These are cool and quiet and produce less heat and are very expensive with comparatively smaller capacities. SSD is doubtlessly the future of computer storage, but for now, the small capacities mean they aren't ideal for things like large video collections.

Battery

If you are planning to be mobile for a longer stretch, choose a laptop which has a longer battery life. You can either choose a 6-cell or a 9-cell battery. Ideally 6-cell battery allows you to work for about 4 hours whereas 9-cell batteries allow you to work for 6-7 hours. However, if you plan to customize your laptop and add a 9-cell battery changes are the weight of your laptop will increase.

Technology is forever changing and it is important you choose the latest of the specifications in the laptop for the price you pay for it. Shopping wish hopes to have solved your queries and helped you make a decision on your new laptop. Please write to us if you have any other doubts.
